If you’re looking for something a bit different on the #wine front this Xmas here are three of my favourite wines I have tried and tested over 2022. There all widely available in independent wine shops across the UK.
First stop is with either of these stunning white wines from Vino Verde in Portugal 🇵🇹. Simply put its like drinking mandarin juice! Delicious 😋
Next stop we head to Heathcote, Australia 🇦🇺 and @MunariWines for the best Shiraz I have ever tried. Despite having some amazing Rhône wines in our range this wine still comes out top for me.

Does the order of drinking wine and beer matter for hangover severity?

A thread 🧵👇

#beer #wine #hangover
It is well established that drinking too much alcohol will result in a hangover. It is commonly suggested that the hangover will be less if you stick to one type of alcoholic drink, rather than drinking different types of drinks.

2/
In addition, there are several sayings such as: “Beer before wine and you’ll feel fine; wine before beer and you’ll feel queer”. This suggests that the order of drinks may impact the hangover.

I was asked to talk on "Working in a Male Dominated Profession" at the #EEAESEM22 women in economics retreat yesterday

In case they are useful for others, a thread on my advice 🧵👇
1/ First a disclaimer: I have a fundamental identification problem - I've not known anything different!!

So I'll likely be mixing up some general career advice & my own prefs - make sure you reflect on your own objective function
2/ There's work on average gender gaps in many dimensions: constraints, beliefs, negotiation styles = higher change women in the profession have diff views & needs from their male peers & seniors

Remember though that there's lots of overlap in distributions & many male allies

Ever notice that there's no ingredients list on a wine bottle?

That's because wine is just made from grapes right?
WRONG.

Thread ->
Before I got into making wine, I'd never even thought about what goes into the bottle, but the deeper I go into the wine industry, the shadier it seems.

Wine hides behind a sheen of romance, pleasure and class, when in actuality, it has a lot in common with other industries.
So what else goes into wine?

There are additives for color, aroma, mouthfeel, acidity, clarity, cold stability and heat stability.

Well exciting news folks! If you live in the Cardiff area something new is coming to town. Something that will hopefully change the dynamic of wine wholesale and retail in Cardiff for the good.
In July @direct_spanish is opening its new store on Penarth Road. This family business has been trading since 2001, and has built up quite a reputation for quality in both the food and wine it sells from Spain. The owners source most of their wares directly from source.
To give you an idea of the reputation, the fabulous @NeilCammies in his last last wine review ever today has selected one of the their wines and trust me Neil save the best for last!

I have actually taken the time to make a spreadsheet with the proposal for the excise reform proposal. My spreadsheet shows me that an average bottle based on 13.5% would cost the consumer £0.69 per bottle more based on all other costs remaining the same.
If that bottle has just 1% more ABV at 14.5% then the price increase per bottle is £1.03. Again with no other fix costs changing. Moreover the reduction on Fizz has almost no effect on the retail prices. There would be no benefit to the consumer.
So once again in the cold light of day this wonderful proposal from @RishiSunak is based on nothing but hot air. Higher prices for consumers, no gain on tax revenues, but an unworkable regime for the actual importers.

Hey @RishiSunak can you explain to the world how moving from 4 levels (bands) of wine taxation to 26 levels (your proposal) is simplifying the excise system. Would really like to know. Maybe I am missing something because seems more complicated. So don’t be shy guy, let us know.
Hey me again @RishiSunak. Looking like 112,000 people would like you to answer this question or do I have to get @CPJElmore to do it in Parliament. Be a good egg and answer the question.
When is duck not a duck? Below is the proposal from government for #wine excise reform. Read very carefully bullet point 3. Its very cleverly written and designed to confuse.

Image

Treasury Wine Estates $TWE $TWE.AX is a global premium wine producer, owner of Penfolds Grange – a collector’s item. Recently it has been hit hard by Covid-19 and China-Australia trade wars. Earnings are down, but is there an asset play? Let’s take a deep dive. 👇
1. Investment Thesis: I prefer stalwarts, but this looks like a decent one-sided asset bet with significant optionality (takeovers, divestments, new markets, completion of trade wars, or return to earnings). The sum-of-its-parts valuation shows it’s may be heavily undervalued.
2. Macro: The earliest remnants of wine date back to the Neolithic period (c.8500BC) – arguably one of the most disruption-proof industries. People will continue to drink wine I suspect for another 10,000 years toboot.. Image
