THREAD: During #WomensHistoryMonth, we will share stories of influential female journalists & women-led news media throughout U.S. history.

We begin in the mid-1800s with Mary Ann Shadd Cary literaryladiesguide.com/author-biograp…
Shadd Cary launched an abolitionist newspaper in Windsor, Ontario, just across the border from the U.S., which had many readers in the states. Later, she returned to the U.S. to become the 2nd Black woman attorney & fight for women's suffrage.

Nellie Bly took on investigative journalism before it even had the name. In the late 1800s, Bly pretended to be mentally ill to gain admittance to an institution in NYC, took detailed notes during her 10 days there, & exposed its many failings. womenshistory.org/education-reso…

let me get this straight @nytimes Donald McNeil Jr used the N-word as well as other racist & sexist talk on a nyt-led trip for HS kids-who had the courage to report it-so NYT *promotes* McNeil while firing @Wolfe321 for breathing fresh oxygen in a tweet after four toxic years 1/8
I've seen @MaraGay of NYT ed board utter similar, if not stronger statements, about a range of issues on @MSNBC @11thHour on the reg. I don't know what NYT counts as 'biased' tweets/reporting, but any conservative friend of mine looking at Gay's page wld say she's obvs "woke",2/8
which doesn't prevent her in anywise from being an excellent editor/reporter. So excuse my outrage when a
conscientious freelance editor gets the boot in one moment & in the next upholds the reputation of NYT that scorned her-telling folx like me not to unsubscribe in protest3/8

#CFWIJ's thoughts go out to all the victims of the #BeirutBlast. We are following this tragic incident with concern and extending our solidarity to #womenjournalists working #ontheground.

Read our statement: bit.ly/2ETkh8E
1. #BeirutBlast left at least 100 dead and 4,000 injured, as reported by @RedCrossLebanon. #Lebanon was already in an economic crisis and hospitals were struggling amid #Covid19. We thank health workers on the frontlines for their immense efforts during this devastating time.
2. #CFWIJ wishes a speedy recovery to women journalists who are among the injured. #BeirutBlast impacted offices of many news organisations. @AP correspondent @dalalmawad tweeted “coronavirus saved us” implying that staff were not in the office where windows were damaged.
