Today is @UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2022 it’s time to shift the focus from recruitment (which is not the main issue) to retention (which is an ongoing problem). This is the current situation in Australia👇🏻, lack of funding of women the biggest cause. This shows the notorious scissors graph for women and men in
In 2022 it’s time for change & time for a commitment from funding agencies & workplaces to prevent women from leaving academia (or from being stalled in their career, working for others). We are losing too many #WomeninSTEMM who are fantastic role models, leaders and mentors.
We (Equity in Australian STEMM) analysed the recent funding outcomes from NHMRC, the major Aus government source of funding for medical & health STEMM researchers. We submitted our position paper to NHMRC last year, the link is here, 🙏 @FranklinWomen ♥️

December 1st and today starts my traditional Women in STEM advent calendar. Some I have tweeted about before, some are new. Time to open door no 1.

Door 1 - Hertha Ayrton. British engineer, mathematician, physicist, inventor. Known for her work with the electric arc + discovery with waves and ripple.

1899, she was the first woman ever to read her own paper before the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).

Door 2 - Katharine Burr Blodgett. Physicist and chemist. Invented the nonreflective glas. Which improved everything from eyeglasses to the camera on your phone. She was the first woman to receive a PhD in physics from the @Cambridge_Uni

It’s great to see all the institutions putting together seminars for us all going into the next round of #nhmrc investigator grants… but my overwhelming feeling is this system is just so BROKEN. Why should we keep finding new ways to explain who we are, /1
and what we plan to research? How about we have an information session for reviewers in recognizing biases, understanding RELATIVE TO OPPORTUNITY (I’m still not over that one) and how NOT TO SCREW OVER the remaining women in science? #womeninstemm /2
And how about we ask @nhmrc to share what the plan is? Because this is currently not working. Like not even close to working. I’m done being made to feel like this is on us to fix. That interpreting this convoluted application will suddenly make me fundable?? /3

Today we are thrilled to have @CatrionaNR (aka the singing scientist) from @TheDohertyInst @UniMelbMDHS share what she's excited about for the future of STEM!

In fact, she's an In2science mentor because she wants to support young scientists who will one day take the reins. Catriona in a school science lab holding a beaker. Catriona
One thing @CatrionaNR loves seeing is more creativity being mashed with science. #SciArt is an amazing space and provides great ways to explore and engage more people in STEM - from songs & comedies to images & nerdy tees. She sums up it up in @museumsvictoria's 10s challenge:
More and more #WomeninSTEM are taking a stand 👩‍🔬 Women are poorly represented in the STEMM workforce, comprising <30% of researchers worldwide.

But there are programs that lift #WomeninSTEMM up, and they are banding together to create change.

There is no difference in the capability of women, underrepresented individuals & men to design & perform outstanding STEMM research & innovation, yet the current ecosystem has deeply entrenched biases in systemic structure, culture & metrics that afford men an unfair advantage.
With funding, this is largely due to the restrictive, limited metrics by which we measure a researcher’s track record & research ‘success’ in Australia.
It is also due to a lack of funding streams that could create more opportunities for women to succeed & accelerate their career trajectory.

OK! Let’s squish some #animalwelfare #science into your day! Who has heard about cognitive bias testing in animals?
Cognitive bias testing is pretty much a way of testing if animals are optimistic or pessimistic. If you are used to experiencing good things, you tend to be optimistic, if you’re used to bad stuff happening, you’re usually pessimistic🔎We use pee a lot in #animalwelfare #science! Image
If animals experience good lives, we expect them to be optimistic when tested. Tests can take different formats but usually associate a good outcome (food!) with a cue (eg high tone sound) and a comparatively neutral/unattractive outcome (eg water) with a different cue (low tone)

As a result of #COVID19, academics are working from home, often while simultaneously caring for their children. As clinicians & scientists, @nataliexdean @DrDianaMW & I worry this will lead to a secondary epidemic of lost early career scientists, esp women w children. A thread👇🏾
We published just this paper highlighting the vulnerability early career scientists may face as a result of #COVID19, particularly women w children. We identified strategies academic institutions could implement to attenuate loss of early career faculty: atsjournals.org/doi/abs/10.151…
Prime reproductive years often overlap with early stage of scientific careers. Even before #COVID19, 43% of women (23% men) left full-time STEM employment after having their 1st child, loss rates that are significantly higher than faculty w/out children. pnas.org/content/116/10…

As an #ECR scientist + mum to 2 kids -who have been lucky enough to attend #EarlyYears #childcare @UNSW since they were babies- I have felt devastated + heartbroken since @UNSW announced they were closing one of these amazing centres centres and privatising the rest 1/6
The unique university-run model enabled these centres to become *literal* centres of early childhood excellence, where places are highly coveted 👉🏻 acecqa.gov.au/media-releases… 2/6
#UNSWEarlyYears reputation is such that I eagerly put my 1st kid on the waitlist when I was 5months pregnant, & was lucky+grateful to get a spot 1.5y later. Our kids have since been cared for by educators who have been @UNSW #EarlyYears for 20yrs - unheard-of continuity! 🙌🏻 3/6

Prepare yourselves for a long thread about the UNSW decision to close one of its #childcare centres...Tonight when I picked my 3 year old up from the centre that is set to close I encountered staff and parents in tears and absolute shock.
As a scientist and mother of two young children I have always been incredibly proud to work at UNSW and have frequently boasted to others about our on-campus childcare. The existence of these centres has been a key enabler of progress for women staff, particularly those in STEMM.
They were a core part of our original bronze @SciGenderEquity Athena Swan submission, which I know as I researched and lead the writing of this section. We now stand at serious risk of losing this award with the recent cuts to EDI initiatives and budgets across UNSW.

Today the @ScienceChiefAu @ATSE_au @ScienceAU release the #RRIFreport on the impact of #Covid19 on #womeninSTEMM. The RRIF was asked by @karenandrewsmp:

What impact is the COVID-19 pandemic having on women in the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) workforce?
Implications outlined include:

"Given the compounding effect of career breaks and gender-based discrimination on career progression, it is reasonable to assume the pandemic is likely to have more long-term negative implications for #womeninSTEMM than men."

#Covid19 #RRIFreport
"The 2019 Women in STEM Decadal Plan outlines a path to achieve gender equity by 2030, including detailed strategic recommendations. While the pandemic may present an additional obstacle, its recommendations remain highly relevant."

...I am humbled to see the wonderful achievements of many inspiring people in health and medical research that identify as women. I hope the advances that have been made to date in this area remind everyone to be brave...
...and have the courage to challenge stereotypes towards making the future more equitable to support everyone to reach their full potential."
