🧵 It’s #WomensEqualityDay, marking 102 years since the 19th amendment guaranteed a woman's right to vote. Women of all creeds protested for decades to earn this right, but many women of color continued to be barred from the ballot box for years after the 19th’s ratification.
Almost two months to the day after the Supreme Court lit 49 years of precedent on fire, it’s impossible to mark #WomensEqualityDay without recognizing the dire realities of Republicans’ post-Roe world.
In red states across the country, Republican lawmakers are inflicting stricter and stricter legislation criminalizing abortion and ripping away not only women’s bodily autonomy, but their economic independence.

Women’s Equality Day celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, which guarantees all American #women the right to vote.

The amendment changed federal law & America.

The drive to win the vote was an extensive & diverse effort. But, it did not guarantee all women this right. Chinese American women fought for the right to vote until 1943, Japanese and other Asian American women until 1952.

August 26 is the 6th anniversary of my being paralyzed. This is my story. I have never adjusted to it, I have never stopped being angry about it, I have never stopped hoping I would somehow recover. I have been having PTSD flashbacks of that day and the trauma for hours.
1/🧵
I am paralyzed because I was prescribed a drug that had not been tested on women and which has side-effects of spinal and other paralyzing bleeds. I am paralyzed because the first hospital where I spent 4 days ignored my pain and told me to "take Tylenol and walk it off."
2/🧵
The pain was like the last hour of labor. It was as bad as abdominal surgery. I thought I might go mad from it. The first hospital knew from the scans they did that I had a huge blood clot in my left upper thigh and another in the middle of my posterior abdominal wall.

As a Black woman, I am very hesitant to join women’s movements or initiatives. In honor of #InternationalWomensDay2022 and #WomensHistoryMonth, I’ll tell you why. Let me tell you a story…(1/?)
Some time ago, I was working on a very sick hospital unit. I watched people on my medical team publicly berate an extremely shy, kind, and knowledgeable Black female pharmacist on OUR team. Yup, we were supposed to be working together. (2/?)
Their behavior was unacceptable and unprofessional. They began to YELL at her for not doing something they wanted in a particular way. That ‘something’ was not life-threatening nor urgent. And they had not been clear about what they wanted ahead of time.(3/?)

Today, we celebrate #WomensEqualityDay, the anniversary of women getting the right to vote.

We’ve progresssed towards equality since 1920, but we have a long way to go.

This thread is not aimed at women. They don’t need to read some white guy’s rant. They’ve lived this.
The gender pay gap inhibits women in every industry and women are frequently denied opportunities for advancement. For every $1 a white man makes:

Black women earn $0.63
Latina/Hispanic women earn $0.55
Native women earn $0.60
White women earn $0.79
Asian women earn $0.87
Women are underrepresented in politics, high-level business positions, and most high-paying industries because of gatekeeping, discrimination, and generally poor treatment.

Today, we honor #WomensEqualityDay & the movement that helped adopt the #19thAmendment into the U.S. Constitution 100 years ago. We’re thankful for the countless women who paved the way, while we acknowledge that too often Black women were erased from their role in this progress.
Black women, in particular, faced racism and violence that kept them from voting.
nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/0…
Black women actively worked to fight for their right to vote.

There were even suffrage schools for Black women who could prepare for a chance to register by studying how to pay poll taxes and how to take a literacy test.

Today is #WomensEqualityDay. Today, I am celebrating the powerful and resilient who have fought and continue fighting for change. But friends, we are far past the point of platitudes. (1/7)
What’s disappointing to so many of us women who are fighting for change is that our Congressman doesn’t even pretend to care about the things that matter to us. (2/7)
He tells us with his words and his votes just how little he values women’s rights and the justice and equity issues impacting women in his district. (3/7)

on #WomensEqualityDay, I'd like to remind you all the ways Trump has failed women and made life more dangerous for us and how Biden will be a champion for us.

A THREAD
Trump has tried to rip away health care benefits & protections for millions of women. In
the middle of a pandemic, Trump is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Obamacare,
which would allow insurers to deny women coverage because of pregnancy or pre-existing
conditions.
Trump rolled back protections from discrimination/harassment in the workplace. He revoked the Obama-Biden Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces executive order,
which required that federal contractors comply w/ labor, wage an hour, family & medical
leave, safety & health, and civil rights

Last night, Abby Johnson spoke at the #RNCConvention. She has recently advocated for "bringing back" head-of-household voting, i.e. men.

Today is the centennial of the 19th Amendment taking effect, giving white women suffrage. Timing! 19thnews.org/2020/08/on-eve… h/t @rerutled
So as you tweet #WomensEqualityDay - which marks the 19th Amendment taking effect - ask why the #RNCConvention platformed a woman who advocates for the reversal of that suffrage.

The GOP happily suppresses the vote of Black and people of colour.

And now also white women.
Abby Johnson - who is of course virulently anti abortion - is Exhibit A for white women who are Bootlickers of the Patriarchy.

I usually call them Footsoldiers of the Patriarchy. That is not enough.

Today is #WomensEqualityDay.

There is no equality for women until #BlackLivesMatter.

No equality until queer and trans people can safely exist and thrive.

No equality until we protect and invest in immigrant families.

No equality until the disabled community has a voice.
There will be no women’s equality until men start to give up some of their power to others.

We won’t have it until we have a restorative justice system.

We won’t have it until we abolish the tipped wage and lift up wages for all.
We will not have women’s equality until we have paid leave for all.

We won’t have women’s equality until we have #MedicareForAll.

Women won’t be equal until we get a #GreenNewDeal.

I want much more more than equality with men. I want to be free. If men themselves are not free of the ravages of racism, capitalism and other forms of oppression, it is not enough to say I want to be equal to them. #WomensEqualityDay
google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…
As long as patriarchy remains unchallenged, men will continue to be the default and the standard against which everything is measured.

Men are not my yardstick. Being powerful must mean more than doing what men do or being what men can be.

I want much more. I want to be free.
Until we divorce ambition from patriarchy, we will forever force women and girls to shrink themselves to fit that asinine phrase “a woman can do whatever a man can.”

I don’t want to do what a man can. I want to be free. #WomensEqualityDay .

This #WomensEqualityDay, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and reflect on the ongoing fight and struggle for women's equality, let's recognize the role @POTUS has played in denigrating women with his words & actions. Since 2017 he has:
Called women pigs, dogs, low IQ, nasty, fat, disgusting, horse face, not my type, slob, wacky, bimbo, that woman. And who could forget his calls to lock her up, send her back, or grab them by the p****?
Condoned discrimination by allowing virtually any employer or school to deny women no-copay birth control, used not only to prevent pregnancy but also to reduce cramps, lighten periods, and prevent acne, bone thinning, breast & ovarian cysts, anemia, endometrial & ovarian cancers

In one of the universe's great ironies for me #WomensEqualityDay is also the anniversary of my being paralyzed.
It has been an incredibly difficult time. My life as I knew it was derailed. Yet the journey from rage to living my life with purpose is worth sharing.
1/
What began as a small nagging pain became the worst pain I had ever experienced--worse than labor, worse than 22 surgeries. The first hospital failed me catastrophically. They didn't listen to the details of what I was experiencing even as the one test they did proved me right.
2/
I was bleeding to death.
Slowly, steadily the treatment I had been on for a year had caused a catastrophic bleed at the back of my abdomen that pushed along my spine, down the neural pathways to my legs & within a week, paralyzed me. I have been in constant severe pain since.

THREAD—Today is #WomensEqualityDay, commemorating the 19th amendment. We should reflect on struggles that allowed new groups to join our electorate, and the work we still need to do to expand #votingrights. 1/3
Over the years, suffrage has been expanded from white men to nearly everyone. Constitutional amendments that increased access to the vote include:
15th--Black Suffrage
19th--Women’s Right to Vote
24th--No Poll Tax
26th--Vote for 18 year olds

My "Top 20" insights over the past year on views toward women and equality. It's been quite a year! #womensequalityday #WomensEqualityDay2019
1) A majority of likely 2020 voters think gender equality has NOT yet been achieved. The exception: 77% of Republican men who say we've made it.
2) 40% of Republican men voters say it's "true" or are not sure whether "Most women get their periods at the first of the month." (We asked this Q to better understand people's knowledge in light of the recent 6-week abortion bans)

If our country continues at this rate, it will take 208 years for women to reach full equity.

But we don't need to wait. We can take action now to ensure women's equality in our lifetime. #WomensEqualityDay
There is no reason women should only make 80¢ for every dollar a man makes in our country—and that gap is worse for women of color.

The gender pay gap hurts families and our economy. Congress can help fix this by passing the #PaycheckFairness Act. #WomensEqualityDay
Maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are bad—especially for women of color—& getting worse, while life expectancy for women has dropped 4x what it has for men. We must address health inequality, invest in research, & expand access to affordable health care. #WomensEqualityDay
