Hello fellow wonks!

As the year unspools ahead of us, we are dedicating this #WonkWednesday to bust 3 myths about this project, to explain where we’ve been, where we are & where we’re going. 🧵

TL;DR: There have been & remain challenges, detailed below.

But the promise of the US’ first 100% renewably powered, 200+ mph train is still the best mobility choice & CA’s aggressive climate goals.

We’re committed to getting there, transparently & collaboratively.

Much of the following was restated and emphasized in a presentation CEO Brian Kelly gave the Board of Directors last week to chart our course forward.

What were we saying? Oh yeah: turkey day.

Friends, family, & loved ones up & down the state want to spend this special time of the year together. But that means travel. And so also carbon emissions. (4/14)
Ex: a 2022 AAA study said >54 million would travel for T-Day in the US, & >90% would do so by car.

Even accounting for carpools, that’s a cornucopia of carbon intensive VMT. [1]

Here are some comparisons to so the carbon cost is more relatable. (5/14)

SF<>LA Round Trip:

Flying:

~390 lbs. of CO2. [2]

Driving 802 Miles:

~497 lbs. [3]

Some estimates of emissions of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, & pie for 12 guests:

~103 lbs. [4]

1 single trip above is 3 times or more emissions than a 12-person meal! (6/14) Detailed description of thi...

You know what’s super wonky? VMT. That’s Vehicle Miles Traveled.

Today, right before turkey day, involves A LOT of VMT.

Ex: We’ve all seen the sea of red & white lights on I-405!

Did you know #HSR has proved around the world it can help?

Join us for #WonkWednesday! 🧵(1/14)
Let’s start at the beginning: what on earth is VMT?

In brief: it is the number of miles travelled by vehicles. If 1 person travels 1 mile in car alone? That is 1 VMT.

If 255 people travel 1 mile in #HSR? That is *also* 1 VMT.

(Please know, this is simplified.) (2/14) Density of people moved in ...
Crucially, because the transportation sector is such a large contributor to California’s climate change causing greenhouse gas emissions (well over 40%), reducing VMT in California is a necessary part of the fight to protect our planet. (3/14)
