HIV is something that has not been getting the attention it needs of late.
On December 29th, 2017, Trump fired all members of the HIV/AIDS advisory council. Two groups have suffered the most from this. People under 25 and the Elderly

You read that right, the Elderly. <Thread>1/
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people 50 and older accounted for 17% (6,812) of the 39,782 new HIV diagnoses in 2016 in the United States. People aged 50 to 54 accounted for 43% (2,959) of the new diagnoses among people aged 50 and older. 2/
Thousands of older people become infected with HIV every year.

Although there is treatment for HIV, (called antiretroviral therapy or ART) older adults may have conditions that can complicate HIV treatment. 3/

2) My book AIDS INC. I performed an obscene act. By any reasonable standard of cause and effect, HIV had never been proved to cause AIDS. A philosopher with a weapon, I was shining light in a cave where researchers were plundering logic to fake a proof...…
3) I was therefore demonstrating that AIDS was NOT *one* condition at all. It was an array of circumstances that produced, in different ways, in different people, the destruction of the immune system...

I lost many friends during the #AIDS crisis.
I still miss them.
I wrote this about #AssottoSaint, who I am thinking of with love on this #WorldAIDSDay
He'd only be 61, were he still alive today.

Remembering Assotto Saint: A Fierce and Fatal Vision
"At some point I stopped going to funerals. I had become that woman, the one who keens and wails in the back of the church or synagogue or memorial hall, the one who everyone thinks might throw herself into the open pit of grave or onto the coffin or urn."
"That fight was our gay Normandy and it consumed all our time, all our conversations. Like whispered messages from a foxhole, staccato shots over the bow of life, we spoke to each other like it might be our last time."

Honored to speak today at the @WhiteHouse to commemorate the upcoming 30th annual World AIDS Day. We have made great progress in recent years, but our work is far from over. And that work will continue until we end the scourge of HIV/AIDS once and for all. #WorldAIDSDay
In 15 yrs we've helped save more than 17M lives & prevented millions more from contracting HIV. AIDS-related deaths have been cut in 1/2 since their peak in 2004. @PEPFAR has been one of the most successful investments in healthcare & humanitarian aid in US history. #WorldAIDSDay
Since Pres. Bush signed @PEPFAR 15 yrs ago, the US has devoted more than $80 billion to prevent HIV infections & deliver lifesaving treatment to millions. This investment is the largest investment by any nation to respond to a single disease in human history. #WorldAIDSDay

The theme of #WorldAIDSDay this year is #KnowYourStatus - Which is good. However the reality in Ireland is, that due to lack of access, over capacity and underfunding, people who go to get a STI or #HIV test are frequently turned away.
Have you ever gone for an STI or HIV test and been turned away?
In 2017, @HIV_Ireland's testing services catered for 1,082 people. However, they had to turn away a further 384 people because they did not have the resources to provide a service to them. #KnowYourStatus #WAD2018
