#RedInstead #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #AutismAcceptance

I debated if I should do something like this for today and it's kinda like... why not. So anyways, a thread.

Hi. I'm Adam, though online people sometimes call me "Moofey." I'm a 36 year old male from the Vancouver area.
Currently, I live by myself smack dab in the middle of suburban Vancouver, and I work full time. I enjoy gaming, (I built my own PC even) as well as cycling, sports, motor racing, and taking nice photos.

Now, I'm about to throw a wrench into all of that:

I'm autistic.
Now that I've mentioned that I'm autistic, how do you see everything else that I've said so far?

"Oh, you can't be autistic enough. You live alone and you have a full time job."

My normal-looking life doesn't really match the description of an autistic person, does it?

#LightItUpBlue Means passive awareness and acceptance of the way Autistic people are marginalized

#RedInstead means being passionate, even angry, about the lack of #AutismAcceptance and fighting against the status quo!

#WorldAutismDay #ActuallyAutistic #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Boycott the people who refuse to center Autistic voices at the design/planning phase and through their projects!

Support #ActuallyAutistic to gain control over #Autism narratives and support structures!
The rest of this thread is dedicated to things people need to know about Autistic people but the #Autism charities don't talk about!

If any of these are unknown you haven't been paying enough attention to #ActuallyAutistic

Like many #ActuallyAutistic people, I spent #WorldAutismDay criticizing the unhelpful actions of well-intentioned companies and groups. That’s important. That’s needed.

For the first time, I’ve started to receive replies of “How can we do better?” That’s a wonderful thing.
As I recently mentioned to someone “we criticize not for criticism’s sake, but because we can - and want to - help.”

Sometimes it takes years for outside protest to sink in, but I see it slowly starting to do just that. So, #ActuallyAutistic people, keep it up!
As autistic people, we should also be prepared to respond to a willingness to change due to our criticism. We should be ready to partner and willing to lead.

That day may not be fully here yet, but it is coming.

And no, I’m not referring to AS. Protest there is still key.

I’m spending #WorldAutismDay in the hospital dealing w/ the effects of #COVID_19. A lot of things got me to to this place, including our society’s failure to understand autistic people and our needs.

Don’t #LightItUpBlue. If I die, lay my body on the steps of @autismspeaks. An image of myself, a shire...An image of a badge in red ...An image of a badge with th...An image of a hospital entr...
Do not worry about me. This is very scary, yes. But I trust I’ll be fine. I’m having difficulty breathing, but my oxygen levels are good (the most important thing).

Turn that focus and energy into connecting with each other and keeping those around you safe.
