Great to wander this morning round @fountainsabbey with @JustinScullyNT & talk about the site. Studley Royal Water Gardens is a #WorldHeritageSite - an important 18thC surviving landscape (for a time it wasn’t invested in & made fashionable so it survived in original state 😮💨)
SIF’s CEO, Dr. Frauke Fleischer-Dogley recently joined other National Focal Points for World Heritage in Eastern African countries for the Final Regional Workshop for the 3rd Cycle of Periodic Reporting in the #Africa region. 1/5

The workshop which took place from 17th-19th Feb was organised by the @UNESCO World Heritage Centre &the @African_WH_Fund discussed & validated the Action Plan to guide the implementation of the #WorldHeritageConvention in the #Africa region over the next 6 years (2022-2027). 2/5
This final workshop ends a two-year process that entailed setting up a Periodic Reporting coordination team, organizing regional meetings, and providing targeted technical support to #AfricanWorldHeritage National Focal Points & #WorldHeritageSite managers. 3/5

Ajanta : Dating from 200BC ,these caves were excavated in 2 phases.
Ellora : 34 caves known for Buddhist , Jain & Hindu cultural influences.

Before proceeding to #AjantaCaves make a small detour (16kms approx) to see the panoramic view of the caves & scenary from AJANTA VIEW POINT.
( Car goes easily. Lil walking of few steep steps)

Archaeologists have numbered the caves from East to West.
Best mural works found in Caves 1,2,16,17 and 19.
Best sculptures found in Caves 1,4,17,19,24 and 26.
Most of it is sadly ill maintained. Hence unless one takes a guide( govt approved) along ,makes no sense.

The real heroes who deserve to be celebrated are the skilled crafts communities integral to #preservation #conservation of #heritage #sites #monuments and #museums across the world. These are photos from the #NalandaUniversity, a #UNESCO #WorldHeritageSite in #Bihar in 2013
Here, when we had gone on a research trip as the Bihar Museum #design team, we had found #craftsmen making bricks and sculptures to help in the restoration of the 1500 year old site. We thought this was extremely imp as the process was similar
I had suggested that this process be filmed and displayed as part of ‘continuing traditions’ in the new Museum. Thankfully, this was accepted and a film has been made 😊
