Today is #WorldOvarianCancerDay. I am sharing my story to raise awareness about this disease. I do it with a grimace. This wasn’t supposed to be my story.
From Jan - May 2021, I had symptoms. Bloating, lower back pain, slight increase in need to urinate, fatigue. I was misdiagnosed, despite having had 2 transvaginal ultrasounds.
I was 42. They thought endometriosis. No one thought #OvarianCancer. My Uncle, an #obygyn, suggested I get a blood test to rule out cancer. My CA 125 level was 925 (normal <35). That same day I contacted a gyn/onc.

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries. But can later spread to the pelvis and abdomen.
Women With Increased Risks:

- Women ages 50 - 60yrs
- Women with close relatives with ovarian cancer
- Women who started menstruating before age 8yrs
- Women who are/were still menstruating after age 55yrs
- And other genetic "Wahalas"

I want to talk about something personal and important to me.

Today is #WorldOvarianCancerDay

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was 52.

She didn't have a gynecologist. Didn't get routine pelvics. When the symptoms first started, she ignored them.

When she first started showing some bloating, we thought she was just putting on a little weight... Just her usual lose a few/gain a few ups and downs.

In retrospect, she carried it a bit differently though. It was localized bloating not ordinary weight gain.

When diagnosed in Stage I, ovarian cancer has an over 80% survival rate.

That rate drops sharply the later it is diagnosed.

By the time my MIL was diagnosed, she was well into Stage III - both ovaries and other proximal organs involved.

If we had only known the signs.
