I’ve just left the incredible, bustling & unique Georgian @ThePieceHall where I’ve had the privilege of spending the day. Thanks to Steve for the fascinating tour & @NickyChanThomDL & @gary_rae for a great lunch meeting. Here’s a tour… #NorthernProgress
The Grade I listed @PieceHall, Halifax is the only remaining Georgian cloth hall in the world, the sole survivor of the great 18thC northern cloth halls, showing the importance of the trade in wool & hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of West Yorkshire
Originally built as a 2nd cloth hall for Halifax @ThePieceHall (cleverly built to benefit businessman John Caygill) opened New Year’s Day, 1779. The opening, involved “much fanfare and public ceremony”. A large crowd participated in the opening celebrations.

It’s #YorkshireDay & I’m appropriately here to see members for the first day of my @Heritage_NGOs #NorthernProgress Over the Saddleworth Moors we spotted a Triumph Herald Convertible for the mobile gang & a tower built as part of the nuclear early warning comms from Cold War era.
Heading 1st to @nationaltrust @fountainsabbey. Re-reading inspiring Fountains Abbey & Skell Valley project to address climate change & flooding in the valley while improving access. In @HistEnvForum #HeritageResponds report tinyurl.com/53exhf3a #NorthernProgress #YorkshireDay
Great to wander this morning round @fountainsabbey with @JustinScullyNT & talk about the site. Studley Royal Water Gardens is a #WorldHeritageSite - an important 18thC surviving landscape (for a time it wasn’t invested in & made fashionable so it survived in original state 😮‍💨)

Two centuries later, Yorkshire’s pioneers are helping to build Britain’s new low-carbon railway, #HS2, including @soil_eng in #Leeds who have spent 5 years investigating ground conditions for #construction of the high-speed route, while growing their business by 35%. 2/3 Image
Once complete, #HS2 will directly serve three of Yorkshire’s main cities – #Leeds, #Sheffield and #York – making it easier for people to live and work where they want; opening up new employment and leisure opportunities. 3/3 Image

Objects in our collection that have killed Sean Bean – a thread.

Happy #YorkshireDay everyone.
In Lord of The Rings, Sean is shot with arrows!

We have these lint arrowheads found in an Early Bronze Age barrow near Scarborough. The central tang would have attached to a wooden arrow shaft and the barbs ensured the arrow stayed in the prey, causing maximum damage!
In The Field, Sean is driven off a cliff by a herd of stampeding cattle…

We have the wonderful Pat the Giant, reputed to be the largest and heaviest beast ever produced in this country at 254 stone!
