1/6 Today is Youth Day in South Africa, a day to reflect and remember the black South Africans who today 44 years ago set out to peacefully protest against the Apartheid regime and more specifically the Bantu education system.
2/6 A system that ensured young black South Africans were not educated, but instead taught how to be servants and fit into the Apartheid regime. Upon their peaceful march the protestors were met by Armed police who opened fire on them with live ammunition.
3/6 Hundred's of brave black students peacefully asking to be educated, asking to be allowed to learn were killed. 1 photo symbolised the horror of that day. A murdered 12 year old boy being carried with his sister alongside him. This was Hector Pieterson.

I once had the pleasure of meeting some of the student leaders of the time. Namely Sibongile Mkhabela, the only woman student leader who was one of the Soweto 11 Accused, who is now CEO of Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Image
The "Soweto 11 Accused" are young student leaders who were captured and mostly tortured (electrocuted, testicles twisted with pliers and the latter) in jail for starting the protest.
