A thread…

This video has been making the rounds on Twitter.

This is @MichaelFordTO - Minister of Multiculturalism and nephew of @fordnation…highlighting the 900 people of Indian heritage that currently live in Ontario.

900. Nine. Zero. Zero.
In Ontario.

A quick google search indicates over 750,000 people of Indian heritage in the province. It took about 30 secs to find that info.

One would think the Minister of Multiculturalism would have access to the same info I have.

All jokes aside…this is emblematic of the @fordnation govt in so many ways.

We see a minister who is woefully unqualified put in a position simply because of who he’s related to…ineptitude rewarded by nepotism…classic Doug Ford.

Yet this is just the veneer.

Speaking as a scientist who's mostly interested in youth mental health and evidence-based policymaking in the digital age, I think this #YouthMentalHealth Advisory by @Surgeon_General and his team provides a pretty cool overview of the existing science. 🧵(1/7)
First, grounding. The @Surgeon_General doesn't mince words, technology and #YouthMentalHealth are impeded and inseparable from broader determinants. (2/7)
Second, realism. The @Surgeon_General is aware of this historic trends and our visceral reactions. Without being reactive, the report communicates why we link tech to #YouthMentalHealth. (3/7)

Step 1: Enable all users to donate their data, their online experiences, to independent researchers. (2/6)
@Surgeon_General says "Directly provide researchers with data to enable understanding of (a) subgroups of users most at risk of harm and (b) algorithmic design and operation."

Step 2: Don't stop at summary reports, the resolution of data needs to be suitable for science. (3/6)

Youth in our country are struggling on multiple fronts including access to education, health, livelihoods. These struggles are further compounded due to poverty. This creates conditions for poor mental health. @SNEHAmumbai 's EHSAS program has imp solutions for this issue.
EHSAS builds resilience in the youth via sessions on health and hygiene, gender equity, sexuality, and employability. Adolescents learn collectively through Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools such as theatre, film making, and poster/comic strips designing.
The program also addresses adolescent’s mental health by providing counseling services and referrals to public healthcare facilities. #youthmentalhealth #youthempowerment
