China's envoy in Paris is first to publicly comment on #A4Revolution

"The Chinese public initiated protests to express dissatisfaction [with] how local gov failed to fully implement central gov policies. But the protests were soon being taken advantage of by foreign forces”
Lu Shaye contradicts Xi Jinping, who told EU leaders protests were down to "frustrated" kids

"The real protests only happened on the first day. Foreign forces came into play already on the second day,” said Lu.

Utterly predictable fare from Lu to blame foreign forces, but interesting that he chose to do so publicly, and so proffer a different view to Xi (although he has yet to say anything publicly)

Wu allegedly said, “Post more, I will chop your bastard hands off”, and told the victim that he informed Chinese public security agencies of the victims actions in support of the protests, and that the agencies would “greet” the victim’s family back home.

This op-ed by @HaesJulia and @klamuh in @TspWissenschaft downplays the hard authoritarian turn under Xi Jinping. Their policy advise for 🇩🇪-🇨🇳 academic cooperation would have been adequate during the early years of the Hu era. But a return to the status quo ante is unlikely /1
The end of China's reform and opening up period (1978-2012) & the rise of the security state under Xi Jinping (2012-) does not feature. Instead the two authors complain about the growing emphasis on 'systemic rivalry' in 🇩🇪-🇨🇳 relations (key words highlighted by me in yellow) /2
Instead the authors bemoan that 'after 50 years of successful cooperation, mutual distrust has thus replaced a belief in the common benefits of scientific collaboration (author's translation).' The culprits are supposedly 'isolationism', 'nationalism', and 'deglobalisation' /3
