Quebec’s #forests goes from northern hardwood with sugar #maple, beech, hemlock in the south, to pure boreal black #spruce forests up north. Natural #disturbances, go from single-tree windthrow or mortality in the south, to large stand-replacing #fires in the north.

Okay, let’s talk about how a Nonspeaking Autistic writer, Gregory Tino, just published a children’s book called The Autistic Boy in The Unruly Body, and how it’s the #1 new release on Amazon’s “Autism and Asperger’s” category. But first, a #NeuroInclusive story about #Apraxia Image features an illustrat...
We made this #NeuroInclusive story with Gregory’s permission, using illustrations from his book. 86% of autistic people have clinically significant apraxia/dyspraxia. That’s a motor planning— not motor ability— disability. Image features a brain stra...
People with mild apraxia may have minor speech or bodily symptoms, and unlike autism, apraxia can be mild or severe. #Apraxia is often called #dyspraxia interchangeably or may be specified as “apraxia of speech.” Image features the same boy...

As abuse survivors, other autistic supporters, parents of ABA/PBS survivors and ex-ABA professionals in the UK, US and other countries, we've worked for several years with BCBAs and other ABA professionals who had begun to feel that they needed to do better for their clients. 🧵
Conversations on Twitter during the past two days have revealed how many ABA professionals remain blissfully unaware of the extent of the corruption in their own industry, and the abuse pipelines which many are inadvertently serving.
This thread will be built over time to provide information for professionals who have caught a glimpse of the extent of the abuse, and who are evaluating their own professional position in the light of these revelations.

Ready for the #CFB Analytics Spring Top 40? Here we go. This Power Ranking is derived from a model which utilizes full Coach Staff efficiency metrics, roster talent, & returning production among other metrics. No opinion here, I just regurgitate the numbers. #NoOpinionJustNumbers
40 #Kentucky #BBN #SEC Power Rating: 61.726
Returning Production for the Wildcats may be a problem. At 39.72%, it puts them at 113th in the country. The schedule is manageable tho drawing Ole Miss & Miss State out the West. #CFB
39 #Washington #PurpleReign #Pac12
Power Rating: 62.271
Really like the new coaching staff in Seattle. Should put them in a better position to win. Roster talent purge from the prev regime will have an early effect (last 2 classes were 39th, 86th) but the ship has been righted.

This is a recent tweet from an "Autism Mom". I agree with her - I DON'T speak "for" non-speaking Autistic people. But neither does she.

Why? Because through #AAC, they can speak for themselves.

Here's a thread of quotes EXCLUSIVELY from non-speaking Autistic people. Heed them. A screenshot of a tweet by @ RachGalarneau White font on a d
"I am the autistic you insist on calling 'severe', 'trapped', 'a burden'. ... You love talking about me but you don’t want me to be part of the conversation. ... I am the autistic supposedly too 'low-functioning' to deserve to be heard." - Amy Sequenzia
"I can never understand how someone can profess how important it is that my voice is heard while also doing everything in their power to silence it." - Cole Sorensen

The #UConn Huskies is an anamoly in college athletics. They love basketball more than anything in a world where it’s FBS football or nothing. While schools look to get into P5 leagues or position themselves into an expanded playoff, Huskies fans just want “don’t be meme bad”
Their old home the AAC says that they could have had a chance to get shitloads of money, and a chance to be a big boy and a potential CFP contender, only to now be adrift and left to either die or drop to FCS for an inferior product.
To many, #UConn has now doomed themselves to a life of obscurity where the #AAC or #ACC could have given them a platform. But Huskies fans are fine since it means more games against Villanova, Providence, St. John’s, and Seton Hall. While 49 other states say that the league is…

We believe students who need #AAC and other communication supports are disproportionately restrained and secluded. This is why we joined this case as a plaintiff. It was one of our first actions as an organization. bit.ly/30TBdr4
We hope the resolution of this case will serve as a model for other districts to address the overuse of restraint and seclusion against students with disabilities.
Thanks to @BrownGoldLevy for their tremendous work on this case over the past 2.5 years!

🧩 Autism politics question

You know how the ABAmongering 'experts' are happy to share a stage with Temple Grandin, Stephen Shore and John Elder Robison, because they know those guys won't bite their heads off --

So, question: Who are their favourite famous AAC users?
I ask this, because it seems to me that they are anti-AAC because of the things that AAC users say.

Seems like, "We like working with people who are intelligent yet know their place; but we can't find any AAC users who know their place now that Carly Fleischmann is gone."
And I don't even mean that Carly was tame; it's just that she had the kind of personal goals that wouldn't necessarily bring her headlong into confrontation with 'autism experts' very often.

Campaign starts TODAY: #AllowAACinTherapy. It's aimed at doctors, psychologists and other clinical professionals, and at the institutions that empower them to disempower disabled people. I have seriously had enough of this nonsense from them.
Doctors do this regularly to one of my friends who is mostly nonspeaking.

A psychologist did it to me when I at a time that I lost speech frequently.

Professionals should #AllowAACinTherapy. #CommunicationFIRST, not 'speech first'. They must stop violating the #CRPD.
People with communication disabilities should not be expected to make appointments using a telephone. You should not have to register as a Deaf person to be allowed to use AAC.

The people behind #CommunicationRights are not obstructionist behaviorists. @NeuroClastic has speech language pathologists, psychologists, educators, OTs, MTs, researchers, neuroscientists, & nonspeakers who communicate through AAC, spelling, & sign. #ActuallyAutistic #Autism
These people may have an aggressive approach to bullying autistics & our allies out of our own narratives & using their white (that's all white people) privilege to maintain the #monopoly on #Autism, but they are NOT allies. They are #oppressors. We can and do communicate. See?
We have orgs, individuals, & initiatives championing #CommunicationRights. @U4CommChoice @Communica1st @ekverstania @autselfadvocacy @awnnetwork_ @ReachEveryVoice and so many more. It's 2020, and we are #nonCompliant with a #Behaviorist agenda that parades itself as #science.

Since I’ve realized I have trouble just sitting through webinars, here’s a thread of me watching the ASHA Sig 12 ( #AugComm ) Tele-AAC discussion that was done live last night.
First is the distinction they (Nerissa Hall & Hillary Jellison) make is that Tele-AAC is different than telepractice generally in that Tele-AAC included the #AugComm system & that the treating clinician has “eyes on” the client’s #AAC system. Photo of the clinician setup including a computer with secure software, an iPad to model, & a 2nd camera.A photo of the client setup: a computer with secure software, an awesome individual communication partner, and a second camera.
They emphasize that the virtual environment for AAC therapy is different & it’s important to be transparent about what is possible. In some cases an individual may not be easily available for this therapy but consultative services to communication partners can be powerful.

Thread : Disability & #COVID2019india

Putting disability-related Coronavirus action points in 1 place.

1st, as told to @ndmaindia , crisis comm from @MoHFW_INDIA and states is classist and ableist. Bilingual, responsive, multimodal content pls. #A11y bit.ly/33sFLkX
We've had to defy Govt rules on approved content, in the interest of serving the disability community in India by making a resource for a range of specific needs of PwD in India - sign language, AAC, media description, EasyRead... #DIDRR bit.ly/aider-covid19
Shame @MSJE_AIC !
What about sustaining other regular life-saving interventions in the time of #covidindia ?
Blood for those who are transfusion dependent and disinfection protocols for those who are dialysis dependent for a start?

Sometimes it's hard to be the parent my #autistic son needs me to be, & I’m always learning about best & better practices. But I wish the research that could help him was better, too.

This is going to be a thread based on a recent @AutismOAR post:

researchautism.org/striving-to-be…

1/
@AutismOAR How is it that my #autistic son is nineteen years old? How is he not still the cute little dude who used to fit on my lap; how is it that he is now so much bigger than me that I am now wearing his hand-me-downs? #parenting #autism #Neurodiversity

2/
@AutismOAR Time flies just as fast when parenting an autistic child as with any child, which is a truism I wish I’d been told when my son was diagnosed as autistic almost sixteen years ago. What else have I discovered about raising an autistic child? 3/

Top Ten Reasons Adults without Autism Deserve AMA (Applied Misbehavior Analysis)

1. ABA is a marketing campaign built around controlling behaviors. It stifles freedom of thoughts and removes autonomy, innovation, self-determination, and creativity.
2. AMA seeks to validate each person's individual strengths, accommodate their disabilities, and provide for them a set of circumstances wherein they can thrive to meet their full potential.
3. ABA reinforces behaviors undertaken in the interest of "social consequence." Those social norms go unquestioned and maintain the status quo. The status quo maintains dominant power structures and keeps minority populations marginalized.

Hullo, what have we here @MoHFW_INDIA ?!

Your recently released Clinical Establishments guidelines 2019 indicate that 'mentally disabled' will need a guardian for informed consent!

First off why are you equating disabled people with minors?
mohfw.gov.in/sites/default/…

#Capacity Appendix 9 EXTRACT
INFORMED CONSENT or CONSENT GUIDELINES
The informed consent shall at the least contain the following information in an understandable language and format (desirably which a lay person can easily understand)
@MoHFW_INDIA @EqualsCPSJ @RajivSpeaks @Deepak_TMN @drsitu @netshrink @vjayakumar @amritbakhshy @val_resh @SmithaSadasiva5 Next - bad enough we've had to suffer conflation of 'unsound mind' with mental illness, now we have a sweeping 'mental disability' which means ... what exactly?
@MoHFW_INDIA @EqualsCPSJ @RajivSpeaks @Deepak_TMN @drsitu @netshrink @vjayakumar @amritbakhshy @val_resh @SmithaSadasiva5 If you cannot assume capacity for all, suspect capacity for all. Stop singling out disabled people for guardian consent.
Embrace diversity in communication and supported decision making.

How to mitigate #NoDeal for the Irish border?

I've now read the report top EU customs experts Pickett & Lux wrote for NI Dept for the Economy on this. Not easy reading ⚠️

Here’s a few highlights.
(For further analysis see the incomparable @PMDFoster)
1/9
economy-ni.gov.uk/publications/i…
First, context:
90% of NI businesses who export to EU trade across @BorderIrish.
94% of NI bus. exporting south are micro- or small enterprises
(Significant, for reasons we’ll return to)
A third of value NI exports to ROI is ‘food & live animals’
(We'll also return to this).
2/9
Second, a reminder of what trading across EU customs border means:
💳providing guarantees for customs debts,
💷payment of customs duties & import VAT
🎫applying for authorisations
🛃complying with customs formalities
📒est. operating procedures for dealing with customs
