I am at the #aarsbl19 (a big Religion conference) in beautiful San Diego and organizers tell me there are over 11,000 scholars attending here! That's enormous! But it makes me think about the state of the discipline - what does the study of religion do for us? /1
When I spoke to an editor for @OUPAcademic coursebooks, he told me that the demand for religion course books had crashed since 2008m (philosophy's still holding up well relatively speaking but also took a hit. 2/
@OUPAcademic He told me that religious studies and theology had a big surge in enrollment after 9/11. Suddenly, American students were like "Hey there's such a thing as religion, and it's important we learn something about it!" - I don't think that changed, so why the drop post 2008? 3/
