Let me correct a rumour going around that one of the local "freedom" groups is organizing an anti-2SLGBTQ+ rally at Calgary City Hall tomorrow.

The protest is being organized by a charge of conservative Muslims under the banner of their fb group YYC Muslims ImageImageImage
This fb group is not widely supported by the larger Muslim community. It's led by a man w/a concerning reputation for misogyny, homo- & transphobia. He is extreme in his conservative ideology, planting seeds of discontent leading up to the #AbElection2023 ImageImageImage
While much has been happening behind the scenes today, with suggestions of a "counter-protest", we are waiting to hear back from Muslim community leaders whether or not this protest, which is being promoted by christofascist & WS groups, will go ahead.

(🧵) Because the one thing tweeps have too much of tdoay, here is my own post-mortem on the #AbElection2023.

TL;dr: The @albertaNDP had a nigh-impossible path to victory. Ms Smith will have a hard time remaining Premier for a full term and the @Alberta_UCP could fragment.

1/21
When @ABDanielleSmith became leader and Premier, I believed she would not have time to turn around the party. In hindsight, the evidence that my call was wrong was readily apparent in the parties' fundraising totals.

2/21
Donations, which had all but vanished under @jkenney's leadership, took off under Ms Smith, and the UCP was once again competitive with, and even beating, the NDP on fundraising. This showed the depth of UCP support.

2023 #abvotes Prediction:

Some explanations first. There are 22 ridings “in-play”. 15 in Calgary and 7 elsewhere.

For safe ridings, UCP leads 37-28.
#ableg #abpoli Image
With decent confidence, I feel NDP will take Slave Lake, Banff-Kan, Sherwood Park, Strathcona-SP, Lethbridge East, Morinville-StA and 6 more in Calgary. UCP takes FtSk-Veg and 3 more in Calgary.

This brings us down to a virtual tie and 6 tight Cgy seats up for grabs.
#abvote Image
To call the next 6, I assumed the UCP are up by 3 in Calgary. I looked at 2019 results plus Abacus data on vote retention from 2019.

Here’s the thing. All of these ridings had strong Alberta Party support in 2019. With ABP vote collapsing, I see all 6 being close, but going NDP

My friends have been trying hard to fight disinformation on WeChat this #AbElection2023

We did not want to share this because of the great shame it would bring to our community.

But everyone who #abvotes Monday should know the truth @ElectionsAB This propoganda will bring ...
A fake tweet claiming to be from @albertaNDP leader @RachelNotley was shared on several Alberta WeChat groups.

It positions Rachel as allowing kids access to gender affirming surgeries without parental consent.

This is false.
@ElectionsAB #AbElection2023 #abvotes A fake Rachel Notley tweet ...
The fake tweet has many mistakes obvious to native English speakers

proud as “pround”

“christian fascism”

Our province as “alberta”

“Enough is Enough”

“affirm their childs”

Learning a new language is hard so I don’t take issue with the text

I doubt this claim. Overall advance vote was 8.1% higher than 2019, a year that saw high conservative engagement. All indications are that UCP engagement has fallen, while NDP is up. This short thread on party data explains why this claim is unsupported at best. #AbElection2023
Most people don't know this, but the parties know if you've voted. All parties have access to the voter roll, including whether or not you've cast your ballot. This helps campaigns in getting out their voters and spares voters from being contacted after they've voted.
However, parties aren't told WHO the voter selected. Parties can only find this out by contacting voters, and their information on this is far from perfect. You can't talk to every voter every cycle. If you're lucky, you'll identify 30-40% of your voters.

I'm voting for the NDP in Alberta this election so that our granddaughters do not have to fight the fights of our grandmothers...for the right to use their own name, to publish books, to paint a painting under their own name and be able to earn a living selling their work 1/9
So they can decide the career they want to pursue without duress.
So they don't have to cross their legs to try and hold back labour while someone produces a credit card to pay the doctor like my mother had to do for the first 3 pregnancies 2/9
until we had #UniversalHealthcare in Canada.
So they don't have to endure forced pregnancies because of someone else's ideology.
So all children can get a good education NOT an indoctrination 3/9

THREAD: Guess it's advanced voting day 1. Let me tell you when I was a Wildrose campaign worker. Youth campaign coordinator to be more precise. I was on Bruce McAllister's team. I looked up to him as a smart, funny Global News anchor every morning growing up. #ableg #abelxn Image
Got a few friends on board who wanted to increase youth voter turnout and instill real change in gov. We beat Ted Morton (who's now simping for Smith). I was elated. My first (real) campaign success. But only two years later, our success was in vain.. #abelxn #abpoli #abvotes
My colleagues and I felt so betrayed. Our hard work against the PC dynasty, momentum for the WR, all but vanished during that press conference. McAllister and Smith turned their backs on the party, their constituents, and all the volunteers like me who believed in them. #abelxn twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

In support of @TheRealDKGray's Alberta electricity market issue, here's what I've learned from Sheldon Fulton (an energy market consultant living in Calgary who has had an active role in the evolution of Alberta’s power market since 1996). 🧵1/
Remember: the UCP “Alberta Affordability Action Plan” included a price cap and deferral for individual homes on the variable regulated rate (RRO) option in cents/kWh. If you’re on a fixed contract, this program has not impacted you. 2/
Note: the green line is the price cap of 13.5 cents. Anything not paid above that is being deferred.
The Jan to March capped period of ~$200 million is being recovered as an energy surcharge of 2.5 cents/kWh for the next 21 months.

The AAA Plan is a “buy now, pay later” deal.3/ As part of Alberta's Afford...
