There are national economic challenges that require national solutions.

I’m proud to live in a country where provinces and different levels of government can come together to develop solutions. 🧵

There would be no TransMountain pipeline expansion in a world with Sovereignty Acts. That’s tens of thousands of Alberta jobs lost.

#ableg #yyc #yeg
But it gets worse. There are very real and very serious concerns about what this horrible bill could mean for federal housing funding, for large-scale investment in transit projects and more.

We have the largest oil and gas reserves in North America — and the fastest-growing market for wind and solar power in Canada.

There is so much opportunity to keep this going, and expand it further. 🧵

We can use our expertise in drilling to convert abandoned oil and gas wells into geothermal wells, turning a blight on the landscape into a new asset.

We can use our abundance of natural gas to come out ahead in the global race to produce hydrogen fuel — both blue AND green.

The following is a portion of my comments concerning the future of energy in Alberta to the Calgary Chamber:

Our economy is going through fundamental and permanent changes.

There is no denying that we are now in the middle of an energy transformation. #ableg #yyc #abfuture
In fact, how we power our economy is changing too.

Our renewable energy industry is taking off. We now have more wind power than coal.

Hydrogen development is becoming more prominent and poses an exciting prospect for our future.

Global spending on the pursuit of low-carbon energy rose by over 25 per cent last year alone. $755 billion dollars worldwide, according to Bloomberg.

We can use the energy resources owned by all Albertans to make hydrogen that dramatically lowers our own carbon footprint while powering a global hydrogen economy.

We have the opportunity to succeed as the world’s leading low-cost, low-emission hydrogen producer.
Our renewable energy proposal on hydrogen, released at AlbertasFuture.ca, explores large-scale commercial production, innovation and export of hydrogen fuel, including a potential new export pipeline.

Heather Sweet (@heathersweetab) has been named the NDP’s Rural Economic Development Critic.

She will be tasked with engaging Albertans and developing a plan to grow and diversify the province’s rural economy. 1/6 #ableg #abfuture
Heather will be reaching out to rural Albertans through the NDP’s Alberta’s Future initiative - a long-term project to hear from Albertans on ways to build a more diversified economy that works for everyone. 2/6 #ableg #abfuture
Last week marked one year since the NDP launched Alberta’s Future. To date, the NDP have held nearly 40 public consultations and have engaged over 50,000 Albertans through the project. 3/6 #ableg #abfuture

So… be warned. Small rant incoming. Settle in. It’s about economic growth, equity, and investing in our future with the greatest (and most obvious) wisdom possible.

It’s about childcare and Jason Kenney’s deeply ideological and also… stupid… betrayal of young families in Alberta.. and the economic growth upon which we are all pinning our hopes. #ableg #abfuture 2/17
Here’s the thing… more and more economists around the world agree that childcare is the single best way for a government to grow its economy (on dollar for dollar return on investment basis.. for all the bean counters among you 😉). #ableg #abfuture 3/17

Great to see the @CalgaryChamber recognize child care as an economic necessity and highlight the Early Learning & Child Care proposal put forward by the @abndpcaucus as part of Alberta's Future. #ableg #abfuture

One question that arose during the online consultation I held last week was how to get employers & businesses more involved in ensuring their employees have access to quality child care. The pandemic has certainly highlighted for employers that this is a key issue for them too.
I've held great conversations with the @CalgaryChamber, @EdmontonChamber & @albertachambers on this & it was clear that they are very engaged on this issue as well. Ensuring that Alberta parents can get back to work is an economic issue for all of us. #ableg

Our NDP Children’s Services Critic @pancholi_rakhi and I were so pleased to be joined by Phil Fulton, a father of two children in #Calgary, who talked about his family's struggle to find child care that was available, affordable, of good quality and close to their home and work. ImageImageImage
In Calgary, the average cost of full-time child care is $1,000 per month, making it the third most expensive city in Canada for child care. #yyc
We're calling for a comprehensive workforce strategy as part of a new proposal for universal, quality, affordable and accessible early learning and child care.

When fully implemented, the proposal, released Friday at AlbertasFuture.ca would put at least 42,500 people back to work and would increase Alberta’s GDP by nearly $6 billion.
The single most effective economic strategy we can implement to get people back to work and grow our economy, is to offer universal, affordable early learning child care.
