1/4 - "Many refugees from #Abkhazia and #Samachablo are fighting in #Ukraine. They just want to go home. They are fighting for this in Ukraine. I think it's ridiculous to talk about someone being a mercenary "боевик" fighting here.

¿Resultado?
Guerra.

About #Transnistria, #Moldova, #Nato and #Russia. A small🧵

But lets start with Georgia first!

During NATO's 2008 Bucharest summit in Bucharest, United States and Poland called for Georgia to be allowed to join the Membership Action Plan (MAP). A roadmap was set. (1/N)
The issue with accession articles and preambles is that implicitly no country without full control of its borders can join the alliance.

Let it sink.

Neither Georgia, Ukraine nor Moldova can join NATO without solving their territorial issues.

Internal conflicts matter. (2/N)
In Georgia it is #Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
In Ukraine it is #Crimea, #Donbas and #Lugansk regions.
In #Moldova it is #Transnitria.

Note that Russia has been for years working hard on their border issues.

Escalation in new member conflict zone would trigger art5. (3/10)

…The conflict between Abkhazians and Georgians dates back hundreds of years. During the time of Stalin, who was a Georgian, there was a forced Georgification of Abkhazia. That is, Georgians moved to the territory of Abkhazia and had to assimilate there…🧵

🧵In #Georgia you can go to sleep in your own house and wake up in Russian controlled territory. That's the reality of Russian #occupation and #borderization. Monthly 5-10 Georgians are kidnapped and unlawfully arrested by Russian-backed de facto authorities . Image

#Borderization: Occupiers continue marking and expanding their controlled territories. Huge amount of Georgian territories were annexed, which affect civilians living in the area. Borderization separates them from their farmlands, family, livelihoods and critical infrastructure.

Russian #SWIFT: how Russia prepared for the threat of disconnection from the global financial system. #sanction

The ideas of import substitution in #Russia began to sound back in 2014. And they also touched upon the financial system.

SPFS is an alternative channel for transmitting electronic messages about financial transactions both domestically and abroad.

There was clearly no alternative for #Artsakh and #Armenia to signing the deal. As #Shushi fell, constant shelling of #Stepanakert would have followed and a complete loss would have followed. It was the only chance to safe some lives, at least.

Yet, that treaty is horrible:
Most of the lost territory was sparsely populated (Agdam, Kalbajar and Lachin Rayons of #Azerbaijan). They were always kept as buffers, mostly. Losing them surely weakens #Aartsakh, but at the same time was always calculated for.
What hurts the most will be the loss of #Dadivank, #Tigranakert and #Shushi. Basically, all historical and culturally important places of #Artsakh are now in the parts taken by #Azerbaijan.
There is a serious fear for cultural genocide: theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…

THREAD: Afro-Abkhazians

Afro-Abkhazians or Abkhazians of African descent were a small group of people in #Abkhazia. The ethnic origin of the AfroAbkhazian descent and how Africans arrived in Abkhazia is still a matter of dispute among experts.

📷The Baltimore Sun. Feb. 10, 1935
According to Sergey Arutyunov, in the late 18th-early 19th century an Ottoman ship travelling wrecked near the Abkhazian coast with slaves -probably from Sudan or Somalia- who were brought up for sale.
Abkhazia was not yet a Russian possession, but Russian soldiers from some fortress on the coast seem to have saved the victims.

They were released from slavery and settled among Abkhazians.

Out today with @ZOiS_Berlin! #Abkhazia, #Transdniestria and northern #Cyprus have universities, academics and students. Due to non-recognition policies, they are cut off from academic exchange and European projects such as Erasmus+. zois-berlin.de/fileadmin/medi… 1/4
This is a waste of talent, a loss of intellectual dialogue. and a missed opportunity in conflict resolution. But overcoming this learning gap will not be easy.
My report with Sabine von Lowis of ZOIS is the fruit of more than two years’ work in the three places. 2/4
Abkhazia and TN are isolated, with archaic Soviet-era HE institutions. Northern Cyprus has embarked on a problematic unregulated commercialization of its HE sector. It now has c100,000 students, more students per capita than any territory in the world, many from Africa. 3/4 Image

Disappointing EU cookie-cutter response to #Abkhazia's elections does not even mention #Coronavirus.
The EU actually has strong interest in Abkhaz having a leader who has legitimacy and can take effective control of territory in its current status. eeas.europa.eu/headquarters/h… 1
Abkhazia claims it is virus-free, but few believe it. It controversially went ahead with elections, prioritizing politics. Aslan Bzhania thankfully won in first round. Now is time to get real about serious threat to a place with degraded health system. eurasianet.org/abkhazia-elect… 2
Through "Non-Recognition and Engagement policy" and UN agencies, EU has capacity to offer direct health assistance to Abkhazia. No longer practicable to welcome Abkhaz to Georgian territory. Russia is poor in its development assistance to clients, unlikely to help properly. 3

I'm at #Eap10. Some thoughts on conflicts
1. Release of joint statement on 10th anniversary of #EasternPartnership unfortunately blocked by Baku as no reference to “territorial integrity.” Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine would also have liked this but were prepared to live without it.
Image
2. As ever, NK conflict is spoiler. Omit reference to “territorial integrity” and you offend Az, mention it, you offend Armenia. This has been going at least since 1996 OSCE Lisbon Summit. Old protracted conflict not only hurts locals, it's a poison seeping far beyond.

Today at my lecture on conflicts in Tbilisi at @Boell_SC I will cite Lord Palmerston's famous quotation from 1865 on the Schleswig-Holstein question. Important that the actors still press for progress in #Abkhazia and don't let it become another obscure forgotten conflict! 1.
“The Schleswig-Holstein question is so complicated, only three men in Europe have ever understood it. One was Prince Albert, who is dead. The second was a German professor who became mad. I am the third and I have forgotten all about it.” 2.
