1/ Time is running out very quickly to #stoptheexecution of Tangaraju Suppiah.

Yesterday, Tangaraju rushed to file a review application based on a new legal argument pertaining to why he believes his conviction and sentence should be set aside.
2/ It was an argument that he had not advanced before. It was summarily dismissed this afternoon without being heard by the court. This means there are no more avenues to halt his execution from taking place tomorrow at dawn unless President Halimah Yacob stops it.
3/ Tangaraju's mother, Paapa, visited him this morning for the first time in almost 3 years. She doesn't know that her son faces the noose tomorrow morning. The family haven't told her because they don't think she will be able to bear it.

Wonderful statement by @ignaziocorrao during @Europarl_EN debate on death penalty in #Iran highlighting the importance of citizens initiatives like @Daadkhast in the effort to #abolishthedeathpenalty (europarl.europa.eu/plenary/en/vod…). 1/
''We are all deeply alarmed by the increasing use of the death penalty against protesters, human rights defenders and dissidents but also ethnic and religious minorities.'' 2/
''In order not to seem only an external concern, I want to highlight the proposal in the joint motion that recognizes citizen-led initiatives in Iran, such as petitions calling for an end to the death penalty and its disproportionate use against minorities and women.'' 3/

We can't just have the death penalty for one person. Even if you believe Dylann Roof deserves to die, by supporting his death sentence, you're supporting the continuation of racial disparities, arbitrariness, murder of innocent people, & extraordinary fiscal & human cost.
I'm sorry if this tweet upsets you. I am. But how on earth could you interpret this as me not caring about or minimizing the brutal and tragic and unimaginable racist violence and murder and trauma and pain of communities and families because of the actions of Dylann Roof?
There are never just "special exemptions." Nature of sentencing laws. Always rule not exception. If the death penalty exists it'll be imposed and carried out predominately and disproportionately against poor, Black and Brown people, only in certain states.

Proud to be a signer on this letter to Biden. “We write to you as attorneys, judges, advocates, & Americans, urging you to begin w/ an act of mercy to carry our nation closer toward justice: immediately commute sentences of all those on federal death row.”static1.squarespace.com/static/5c894b6…
“In the last six months, we bore witness to the execution of thirteen people — more Americans put to death in those months than in the last six decades of this nation’s history. These thirteen deaths stand as an affront to the very legal system we operate in every day.”
“Obama halted federal executions, but did not commute sentences of all on federal death row, leaving the door open for Trump to pursue a death spree that hasn’t been seen in well over a century. The very existence of death row leaves many susceptible to the machinery of death.”

1/ The execution of #LisaMontgomery would have been unjust at any time, but the fact that it was allowed to go forward last night wasn’t just tragic —it was a staggering violation of our constitution and values.
2/Lisa suffered horrific sexual violence and torture and deserved our mercy, not a punishment judged immoral by most of the world.
3/ In these last distorted days of Trump’s failed presidency, with impeachment proceedings underway and elected leaders from both parties speaking out about the failed coup, Trump didn’t even bother to respond to her clemency petition.

How can a government claim moral authority or respect for law when it intentionally murders any human, let alone Nathaniel Woods? Serious clams of innocence abound, the victims’ family thinks he’s innocent, his co-defendant swears he’s innocent. Alabama set to execute him tonight
The stay of execution by the US Supreme Court was only administrative and has already been lifted. Clemency by Governor Ivey has been denied, despite a letter from the sister of one of the officers begging her to reconsider. It's moving forward as of now.
