At the inaugural Feminist Book Club event at @strandbookstore last night, Dr. Meera Shah was asked how we can fight back against abortion bans. She gave many great ideas including "Say the word 'abortion' more. Talk about it more." #AbortionIsNormal #AbortionIsHealthcare Two women sitting on either side of a big banner that reads
The book club, co-presented by FEMINIST GIANT & @strandbookstore, launched w/ Dr. Shah's You're the Only One I've Told: The Stories Behind Abortion which inspired me to break the silence--refuse shame--around my abortions. TALK ABOUT ABORTION šŸ“· @rerutled

In 1996 I had an ā€œillegalā€ abortion in Egypt and in 2000 I had a ā€œlegalā€ abortion in the U.S. I use inverted commas because I reject the Stateā€™s attempt to control my uterus. feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-ā€¦ #AbortionIsNormal #AbortionRightsAreHumanRights
I reject its power to declare what is ā€œlegalā€ or ā€œillegalā€ when it comes to my abortions.

The State--and the Supreme Court--can fuck off with its opinions about what I can and canā€™t do with my uterus.

That control belongs to me.

I'd told a few friends privately about my abortions but it took me 25yrs to write/speak about them publicly.

Why? Was I not brave, I ask in Abortion is Normal, the 1st essay I wrote about them for Safe Abortion Day in September 2021

Why is there so much silence around abortion?

šŸ§µLast night, @GovernorVA Youngkin sent down an anti-abortion budget amendment he is hoping YOU donā€™t notice. It strips essential funding from lower-income pregnant people & families that receive a ā€œgross & total incapacitating fetal anomaly diagnosis.ā€
2) This is a CRUEL & CALLOUS attack on a family facing a tragic pregnancy at their most vulnerable moment. This is also about taking power & control away from a family's personal, private medical decision. STUNNING! #AbortionIsHealthcare
3) Here is @GovernorVA Youngkinā€™s letter to legislators. How does forcing lower-income people to carry a doomed pregnancy to term against the advice of their medical provider and/or their own personal family decision make VA ā€œthe best state to raise a family?ā€

Sept. 28 is #InternationalSafeAbortionDay. Abortion should be safe every day. In 1996, I had an "illegal" abortion in Egypt. I was lucky.
I was lucky because when I found out I was pregnant, my boyfriendā€™s cousin recommended an OB/GYN doctor in Cairo who performed abortions in his clinic. I was lucky because I could afford the procedure. feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-ā€¦ #InternationalSafeAbortionDay
In 2000, I had a "legal" abortion in Seattle in the US. Again, I was lucky. I did not have to drive for miles to access abortion care. I did not have to take time off that I could not afford from work or find overnight accommodations because there was no clinic in my town.

Today is #SafeAbortionDay. This is the first year that I have been able to say: I have had two abortions. I am glad I had my abortions. They gave me the freedom to live the life I have chosen. #Sept28 #AbortionIsNormal #AbortionIsHealthcare
I was not raped. I was not sick. The pregnancies did not threaten my life. I did not already have children. I just did not want to be pregnant.

Criminalizing abortion does not eradicate it nor does it make it rare. It makes it dangerous and often deadly for the poorest and most vulnerable people who can get pregnant.

One in four women has had an abortion, including me. It's taken me years to write this essay. #AbortionIsNormal

I was not raped. I was not sick. The pregnancies did not threaten my life. I did not already have children. I just did not want to be pregnant. I did not want to have a child. And so I had two abortions.
