The hardest thing I've done in 2022 was prep and submit my Tenure & Promotion dossier, which is now happily moving thru dept + uni committees. This took me ALL of spring semester (as big a time suck as writing a new grant), so here a 🧵 illuminating the T&P process #academiclife
First, I had to write my T&P dossier entirely *from scratch* since I never had a 3rd year review due to UCR->UGA lab move. Every uni has its own format/system for T&P dossiers, so your 3rd year review is usually "practice" for this process (+ forces you use correct formats, 2/n)
Importantly, when I moved to UGA I negotiated three years of "credit" towards T&P, so I didn't have to completely restart the tenure clock here (get this in writing!). But, any CVs/documents/annual review materials I had from the UC system were basically useless at new uni (3/n)

My friend and I keep sending each other PhD memes to keep sane. Today we decided to collate them to send to our supervisor (we have the same one) after we submit. #phdlife @AcademicChatter @PhDVoice

How to survive the German (and other?) academic systems without having a permanent position?

A thread🧵.

(Disclaimer: This is about my personal experience as an ecologist. In other disciplines, it might be very different.)

#academia #IchbinHanna #ecology #academiclife
Background:
In Germany, it is difficult to get a permanent position in academia without the typical CV (eg reasonable publication list, period working abroad, being young) AND if you do not fit into the classical categories of research (eg botany). And bad luck, of course.
Positions are advertised very specifically on a certain topic. Perfect, if you fit, nearly impossible if you don’t. I was once asked in an interview if I can analyse a certain kind of data set. Nope. Out. A habilitation is often expected, although usually only vaguely stated.

3 story frameworks you can use to make your research presentations 🔥 🧵

1. The Journey
2. The Mystery
3. The Conflict

These 3 frames drive curiosity which will make people want to listen to your talk.

1. The Journey

Great for talking about how a project went, reporting or chronological storytelling.

The curiosity driver here is - what we've done/happens next?

Structurally the journey tends to follow the mountain.

A uphill march towards a goal, with successes and failures along the way.

These ups and downs keep us interested enough to listen to the whole thing.

For me, the worst part of being #disabled is the drain on my ego. Its incredibly hard to maintain a sense of self-worth and confidence when you are literally constantly thwarted by simple tasks that almost everyone else does with ease, compounded by the social isolation. 1/8
This thread isn't to invite pity.

For the #disabled, its to give hope that you can achieve great things. I'm living out my dreams, even though I still struggle with the weight of my brokenness. 2/8
For the abled, this thread is to share a piece of my world and ask that you extend empathy to those who have a very different set of challenges and blessings due to a disability they have zero control over. 3/8

Very interesting data on the 8+ year outcomes of T32 training program. See thread below. #Epitwitter #training #T32 #AcademicLife #AcademicChatter @NIH 1/9
nexus.od.nih.gov/all/2021/02/01…
The shocking part to me is that only 12% of T32 trainees eventually became PIs of R01s. I truly expected much higher proportions. Was this wishful thinking? 2/9
Important to point out that the study covers T32 trainees who matriculated btw 1995-2009 and were followed up until 2017. Hence some, especially in the later cohorts may be still due to be R01 PIs. 3/9

Just had this thought after conversing with some fellow Black colleagues in academe about hostility we have (and continue to) face on the job. So, to my Black fam in academe, many of you work in units where the knees of white supremacy are constantly on your necks. They put...
put their knees on your necks because they know the structure in academe encourages and incentivizes anti-Blackness. Yet, some of those culprits who dare seek to block your joy and contribution will attempt to send calls of action to your unit listservs, etc., demanding...
that your dept makes a statement, or etc. Understand, you’re duty-bound to reject these overtures – they’re insincere and phony #NotWithMyName. Especially if these colleagues have yet to repent. Again, #NotWithMyName! Sometimes all we have left is our dignity, and we should...

On parental leave, nursing (feeding...any way that gets 👶fed) and have a #teleconference you would like to/should join? A thread on my strategies which may help others. #academicmom #academiclife #academicchatter
Parental leave + #conference call = stress/anxiety for many moms trying to do it all.
Prepare your wardrobe (Yes, it's important!). 1. Earphones which have volume/mute controls. 2. Nursing top. 3. Cardigan/open sweater with pockets to easily store and access phone. ImageImage

I recently dreamed that one of my colleagues was wrongfully accused of murder, and because of the trial, could not teach their fall class. I feel like an "oh god I have to solve a murder so I don't have to teach an extra class" anxiety dream is like next level #academiclife.
in the past half hour this tweet has gone from wtf anxiety dream to "when will I have time to write this spec script and also who will play me in the HBO series"
S1 opens in mid-summer when a tenured computer science prof is found in his lab surrounded by simple robots testing conversational agents, busily chatting about top-voted reddit posts while he dies from blunt force trauma. The murder weapon is a dusty teaching award.

Dear followers, I know some of you are here to talk about bees & flowers. Or maybe about #academiclife. And all you're getting from me these days is politics. Here's a thread about why that is.
Some people think science shouldn't be political. But being able to separate politics from science is a privilege not everyone has. As someone who experiences microaggressions on almost a daily basis, I can't pretend this isn't a part of my every day.
There's a lot going on in the world right now and I'm trying to amplify voices which are often ignored. Indigenous rights are human rights and all Canadians (even people who care about bees) should care about what's going on.

Let's talk #academiclife relocation as a #postdoc #phdchat

I just moved across the country (Louisiana to California) for a great govt postdoc. Big pay raise, benefits, a real job, etc.

I don't know if I can pay my rent next month. Here's why.
I had to pay $3,000 to move my family and me. We shipped whatever we couldn't sell and drove. We stayed with family to avoid lodging, made our lunches, and had our spending on lock down.

I won't be reimbursed for a penny because my job isn't a permanent position.
Because we couldn't afford to visit first to find housing, we had to go in blind (I interviewed in person at a conference).

To get into a duplex, we had to front another $4,000. Just to sign the lease!!
