Hi, I'm just an abortion provider, wanting you to know about the wave of anti-abortion legislation happening across the country that @PressSec and @POTUS have yet to comment on:
1/
AZ just passed a bill banning abortions for fetal indications, and confers embryos and fetuses civil rights as long as they are inside a uterus (but not if they are created/destroyed in a lab setting, eg during in vitro fertilization). 2/

OK just passed 3 anti-abortion laws, including a ban after fetal cardiac activity is detected, revoking medical licenses for physicians who perform abortions, and that only OBGYNs may perform abortions. 3/

We recently received a long-awaited decision from #SCOTUS in our case challenging Louisiana's abortion clinic shutdown law.

While we are thrilled that #SCOTUS ruled in our favor and struck down the law, there is still so much more work to do to protect abortion access.
Our President and CEO, Nancy Northup explains what comes next in the fight to protect abortion access in the United States in her op-ed for the @washingtonpost:

#MyRightMyDecision #ActForWomen washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
"This insidious campaign against abortion access hurts communities of color, young people, rural communities and people living in poverty the most."

ICYMI: In a big win this morning, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in our case, June Medical Services vs. Russo, striking down Louisiana's admitting privileges law as unconstitutional. #MyRightMyDecision

A statement from our President & CEO, Nancy Northup, on the ruling:
"This is a big win that vindicates what we’ve said all along, which is that the Louisiana admitting privileges law is unconstitutional. This is a victory for the people of Louisiana and the rule of law, but this case never should have gotten this far.
We won an identical case four years ago in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, and the fact that we had to fight so hard again goes to show that nothing should be taken for granted when it comes to protecting abortion rights.

Today was an historic day. We heard from real people who know what it’s like to provide abortion care, to struggle to obtain abortion care, and to fight to protect the constitutional right to abortion. They showed us why we need to #ActForWomen. Now, it's up to Congress to act.
Our President and CEO, Nancy Northup, testified alongside Dr. Yashica Robinson, an OBGYN who works at one of the last abortion clinics in Alabama and Holly Alvarado, a member of the U.S. military who had to contend with a web of burdensome restrictions to access abortion care.
Holly had to drive hundreds of miles across state lines and empty her bank account in order to obtain abortion care and was then deployed to Afghanistan just a week later with almost nothing to her name. #ActForWomen

.@janschakowsky is back in the hearing room and speaking again. She asks our CEO to clarify what medical professionals have said about the Women’s Health Protection Act.
Northup speaks to what @acog & @AmerMedicalAssn have said about the laws that the Women’s Health Protection Act protects against. These leading medical orgs and others have taken positions against these restrictions because they are not based on medicine or science. #ActForWomen
She points out that these organizations submitted a brief in our U.S. Supreme Court case as well, which explains that these types of restrictions actually HURT patients and quality of care. #MyRightMyDecision #ActForWomen

As Chair of the Congressional Pro Choice Caucus' Providers & Clinics Task Force, I’m proud to be a part of @EnergyCommerce’s 1st hearing in 20+ years to ensure access to abortion care, free from political interference.
We must pass #WHPA and #ActForWomen. We will not go back.
FACT: the Women’s Health Protection Act will ensure women can access abortion care without unnecessary political interference. Since 2016, states have passed over 170 unconstitutional laws to restrict the right to abortion care. It’s time to pass #WHPA and #ActForWomen.
Abortion is health care and health care is a human right. I believe ALL women should have access to safe, affordable abortion services free from the interference of anti-choice politicians. That’s why I #ActForWomen and am an original cosponsor of #WHPA.

.@RepSarbanes thanks Holly Alvarado for her testimony and asks her to touch again on the obstacles she encountered when seeking abortion care. He also asks Nancy Northup to comment on these obstacles in relation to our work. #ActForWomen
Holly points first to the 24-hour waiting period, which forced her to make two separate appointments. She says that, as a law enforcement officer, these restrictions made her feel unsafe and that they are dangerous for women. #ActForWomen
She then talks about the mandatory counseling and mandatory ultrasound, both of which she said were not patient-centered care and had no purpose. She had already made her decision and these requirements were meant to change her mind. #ActForWomen

Dr. Robinson says it is already difficult for her patients to make certain health care decisions and laws that require her to lie to them about abortion care makes the process exponentially more difficult and confusing for them. #ActForWomen
Dr. Robinson also says that people who walk into her clinic have already thought about their decision to get an abortion. There is no reason, medical or otherwise, to force pregnant patients to wait even longer to receive care. #ActForWomen
In response to Rep @DorisMatsui, Dr. Robinson confirms that she believes the Women’s Health Protection Act is necessary to protect against medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion that make medical decision more difficult & confusing for her patients. #ActForWomen

Rep @FrankPallone asks Nancy Northup about why we need the Women’s Health Protection Act in practice. Northup responds by saying that despite constitutional protections for abortion care, states continue to pass medically unnecessary restrictions. We need WHPA to protect access.
Nancy Northup says that WHPA would protect against things like so called “abortion reversal” laws, which require doctors to lie to their patients by telling them that abortion reversal is a legitimate medical option. It’s not. #ActForWomen
Rep @FrankPallone says that he’s proud to support the Women’s Health Protection Act and that it is not fair that a person’s ability to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to abortion care depends on where they live. #actforwomen

Starting now: Advocate Holly Alvarado testifies in support of the Women’s Health Protection Act. She experienced multiple barriers to access abortion care in North Dakota, which only has one abortion clinic. She was told to travel to Minnesota, 4 hours away for care. #ActForWomen
Holly had to spend 4 days in Minnesota to fulfill the state’s requirements before receiving abortion care.

“I never wanted to travel to Minnesota. I never wanted to jump through all these hoops to get an abortion.” #ActForWomen
Holly says she felt relieved after her abortion & knew it was the right decision for her.

A week after the procedure, she was deployed to Afghanistan w/ almost no money to her name bc she had to spend it all to travel to receive her abortion and pay for the procedure herself.

Our President & CEO Nancy Northup notes that people around the country have been calling for legislators to codify Roe into federal law. The Women’s Health Protection Act will do just that. #ActForWomen
“Never have I been more concerned than I am today about the promise of Roe being hollowed our for too many women in this country.” - Nancy Northup #ActForWomen

Starting now at the Women’s Health Protection Act: the witnesses, including our President and CEO, Nancy Northup, are being introduced. The first witness is Dr. Yashica Robinson, an obstetrician and gynecologist.
Dr. Robinson, who works at an abortion clinic in Alabama, says it is not unusual for patients to travel up to 8 hours to reach the clinic for abortion care. She says that several clinics have been forced to shut down due to medically unnecessary restrictions. #ActForWomen
Dr. Robinson:

“Health care should be patient-centered & medical decisions should remain between a patient and their physician without political interference.” #ActForWomen

She also notes that protecting abortion care would protect pregnancy care, as they’re closely integrated.

Good morning!

I'm listening in on the "Protecting Women's Access to Reproductive Health Care" hearing, a federal legislative hearing that will hear testimony on the "Women's Health Protection Act of 2019" a federal bill that would protect access to abortion.
Right now we're in opening statements, hearing from @michaelcburgess from Texas, a former OBGYN, who identifies himself as "pro-life"

He calls the bill's language "heavy handed" and notes that medical advances have put into question Roe v Wade's viability benchmarks.
@michaelcburgess He closes by calling the bill "most uncomfortable and threatening legislation" he's seen in his career as a lawmaker.

1. Tomorrow, our President and CEO, Nancy Northup will take the stand and testify before Congress in support of the Women's Health Protection Act.

So, what is the Women's Health Protection Act, and why do we need it? #ActForWomen THREAD:

2. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the right to access abortion care without undue burden. Yet anti-abortion lawmakers have escalated their attacks, pushing through over 170 harmful laws since then, and nearly 450 since 2011.
3. These laws:
• Obstruct abortion access
• Lower quality of care
• Shame patients
• Require providers to perform medically unnecessary procedures and lie to patients
• Increase costs and risks of #repro health care
• Create gross inequities in access to health care.

.@amyklobuchar is the next presidential candidate to take the stage at #OurRightsOurCourts!

We're more than halfway through our candidate interviews now, but we still have 30 minutes with Senator Klobuchar, @ewarren and @DevalPatrick.

Tune in: facebook.com/reproductiveri…
@amyklobuchar @ewarren @DevalPatrick .@amyklobuchar promises to "appoint good judges who respect the law." #OurRightsOurCourts

Our Supreme Court case is, at its core, a matter of respecting the law and legal precedent. We are challenging a law that is IDENTICAL to one declared unconstitutional by #SCOTUS in 2016.
@amyklobuchar @ewarren @DevalPatrick When asked about what she would do to ensure affordable or free contraception for those who need it, @amyklobuchar responds:

1. Fund @PPFA
2. Make it known that 1 in 5 Americans get their health care from places like Planned Parenthood at some point in their lifetime.

.@BernieSanders just took the stage at #OurRightsOurCourts! Don't miss this!
"These are unprecedentedly difficult times for our country in so many ways and I know that many people in this room have spent their lives struggling to make certain that in America it is women who have the right to control their bodies, not the gov't." - @BernieSanders
"I will never nominate anybody to #SCOTUS or any federal court who is not 100% pro Roe v. Wade. As president we will move aggressively to codify Roe v. Wade." - @BernieSanders

IMPORTANT: Codifying #Roe is exactly what the Women's Health Protection Act would do! #ActForWomen
