"China promptly issued a protest on Monday after a US Navy P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance plane flew through theย Taiwan Strait"

Monday, their time, is still 2023-02-27, ie today.

Did anyone already identify which #USNavy Boeing P-8A Poseidon that was this morning?
So far there seem to have been five different #USNavy P-8A Poseidons that have taken off from #KadenaAB, 4 of which conducted operations near China today, using the following Mode-S numbers to uniquely identify themselves.

#AE67BE
#AE67DA
#AE67DC
#AE683D
#AE686A (unrelated)

Are you familiar with how MLAT works? I have a dataviz/infographic/GIS visualisation challenge that I'm coming to the realization I do not have the skills to adequately convey in a graphic, and am looking for some help.
Basically, I'd like to show what Syria (say) would look like with a robust MLAT-gathering network of Mode-S receivers in an isometric 3D representation, showing overlapping coverage cones, and the density of receivers needed for border or nationwide MLAT, if that makes any sense.
I picked Syria because the coverage in that area of the world isn't robust and we miss a lot of the aircraft coming in and out of the country, as well as neighbouring Iraq and Turkey.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Has anyone looked up the Mode-S of the #USNavy P-8 Poseidon used in this piece, and put together the timeline of this story yet?
Mike is on the case, zeroing in on the time, which is what I needed! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I'm presuming the flight was conducted with journalists from multiple outlets simultaneously. (NBC, CNN, more?)

Before I explain to the #AusAirForce ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ comms ppl, please appreciate that their P-8A Poseidon fleet broadcasts its own location to anyone who will listen, using ADS-B. That signal will geolocate them from orbit. On patrol, their locations are the least secret thing over the SCS.
This tweet, that has all the words in it you'd need to find it, gives you the tail numbers and ICAO Mode-S hexes of the whole #AusAirForce ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ P-8A Poseidon fleet. You can follow them pretty much any day with the link that's included in the quoted tweet.

On 2023-02-09 #AusAirForce ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ P-8A Poseidon A47-011 arrived at #KadenaAB ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on #Okinawa ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ตas call sign #ASY150.

Here's a way you may not have looked at the data #ADSBexchange gives you.

Planes using ADS-B transmit their precise location (lat/lon/alt/speed/etc) but planes using Mode-S need to be geolocated using multilateration (MLAT). like TRIangulation, but with 4 data points (Multi) ๐Ÿงต
Here is an image (and link) representing *only* planes being geolocated using MLAT. Meaning, 4 or more #ADSBexchange receivers have them in line-of-sight (LOS); 10 of them.

inaccurate.adsbexchange.com/?filterSourcesโ€ฆ
Here is the same area, showing you what aircraft transmitting Mode-S are not being geolocated, meaning 4 #ADSBexchange receivers do not have these planes in LOS; 81 of them.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ People stop me on the street all the time and ask me, Stef, how can you tell where in the United States there are too few #ADSBexchange receivers to geolocate aircraft that aren't broadcasting their precise location data using multilateration (#MLAT)?
Great question!
Here's what you do:
filter by altitude, between 10,000-40,000 ft, that restricts the results to aircraft which are flying high enough that we should home four or more receivers are in line of sight, a requirement for #MLAT.
Then filter so you only see the Mode-S-transponder-transmitting aircraft

Let me understand this really well, ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ #NORAD QRA fighters didn't shoot down the ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Chinese spy balloon in American, then Canadian, then American airspace? ๐Ÿ˜‚

YOU HAD ONE JOB.

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ
They flew right through the #ADIZ that the media get their bloomers in a bunch about when the Russians fly antiques through, and VIOLATED American and Canadian airspace, which the Russians never do, and the Chinese continue to do; did I get that right? What a bunch of bullsh!t.
I suspect the #USAF are flying their own spy drones over China on the regular, without the public's knowledge, in full view of the Chinese military, and they're terrified the Chinese will start shooting them out of the sky if they shoot down the balloon.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ In June the #RCAF participated in a Search and Rescue exercise based out of Lajes, in The Azores, and for some reason didn't think the Canadian public wanted to know, so they didn't tell anyone anything.

It might have been part of #ASAREX #ASAREX22 #ASAREX2022, I can't tell.
Here is video, part of the exercise filmed by one of the locals. (h/t @Dapotayto1 for the link!)

I'm unclear when the exercise started or ended, but their call sign suggests they began to prepare in early June

#401Sqn flies out of #4WingColdLake, we should see a refueller between the Alaska and Cold Lake around there. Possibly additional logistics flights for support staff.

FYI, I often do these threads without looking up if I can find something so you can see how the sausage is made.
If I start looking for where RCAF tankers were on 2022-04-01, we see the return flight by #4WingColdLake fighters from California, where they spend most of the winter because Cold Lake is.. well.. it's Cold, yo!

Notice they're using AR-4B to refuel on 2022-04-02.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ With the Ontario Provincial Police #OPP circling the anti-vax rally today, I figured I should make a thread about what we can tease out of the behaviour of their surveillance Cessna, and if any of that can be applied to other aircraft in the fleet. ๐Ÿงต
First, consult the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register (CCAR), and search using the name the OPP has their aircraft registered under:

"Province Of Ontario, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services"

Now you have a list of all their aircraft. ๐Ÿ‘
wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/โ€ฆ
Pop that in a spreadsheet for later, and use the registration numbers to hand-roll a search for the aircraft using #ADSBexchange.

We also see very clearly the sensor being used is on the right hand side of the plane; they conduct the pass at ~370kn, turn around as fast as they can (~450kn+), and make another pass, three times. Their departure wasn't forced, they were done; they left at ~420kn; not that fast

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ I know you want to know more about how the sausage is made, so look carefully at this image from 2021-09-22, yesterday, when RCAF CC-130J 130610 was flying some training flights over Ontario, and see what information you can extract.

I'll show you:

The network of transponder receivers collects the data the plane is transmitting with an omnidirectional antenna. Any plane using ADS-B, like that one, only needs to be "heard" by one ground station and it's coordinates (from their transponder) relayed to #ADSBexchange.
The green circles show where receivers (which the operators of have opted to make their location public, like I have) are feeding the ADSBexchange network from.

Given the constant buzz of American ISR assets over Iraq, it's probably just one more, but the rest of them are pretty loud and proud about their identity. Already L3, Textron, and other contractors can be noticed operating over Iraq all night long, every night.
