It is not good enough to care. Anyone can care.
What are you going to DO about reports of people being brutalized, forced from their land, murdered?
We don't have to tick a box for consciences: "I care" -- who gives a shit? 😠
Me, I want to see these people free, safe, alive. 🇪🇹
How will it be put right, folks?
When does the civil rights campaign truly begin in 🇪🇹?
They attacked your church. They attacked #Adwa.
They are slaughtering a whole ethnic group.
No one ever wins their rights by asking -- you have to demand rights, fight for and win them.
A former(?) ally sent me a DM recently: "Don't put your hand in these troubled waters." To which I must politely respond: Get stuffed. I go where my friends ask for my help. When they kill the relatives and neighbors of my friends, hell no, not sitting this one out. Screw that.

As an Ethiopian Muslim I have a complicated relationship with the legacy of Emperor Menelik.

I recognize his leadership for achieving the Victory of #Adwa & keeping Ethiopia free. However, he is not ‘Emiye’ for me or my community. He is a man of his times and history is complex
Somebody’s hero is a villain in another’s version of history. And that’s okay. That’s how life is.

Menelik’s contribution to Ethiopia and his leadership is etched in history. No amount of revisionism or omission will succeed and frankly is so petty and disgusting.
No amount of glorifying a fallible man will absolve him of atrocities committed during his quest for power. Denying this history is the source of distrust, division and pain in our nation.

In the second half of the 19th century, England, France and Italy were more of a threat to Ethiopia than were Egypt and Ottomans. This was because an Italian company had bought part of Asseb and France was intent on connecting Fashoda in Khartoum to Djibouti.
During this time, England, France and Italy began to use the term '#Abyssinia' as a means to divide northern Ethiopia from the rest of the country. This name was never used by the people or rulers of Ethiopia, even if they were ever mistakenly referred to as such.
Emperor #Yohannes' conquest of Dogali, with Alula, first drove away the Italians, however he soon passed away in Metema. Succeeding him was #Menelik and this European intervention aggravated domestic issues.

"Most nations have independence day. Ethiopians have victory day and It is... Adwa"

[THREAD🧵] attributed to Adwa.

The african victory in the age of empire. One of the proudest moments in african history & an ever-smarting wound of imperialists. 1/14
1. Cause of The Battle of Adwa

It was the result of Italian encroachments south of their colony of Eritrea on the Red Sea. Though bound by the Treaty of Wichale (1889) to friendship, the Italians and Ethiopians had different opinions about the nature of that friendship. 2/14
2. Treaty of Wichale

There was a mistranslation on Article 17 of z treaty, where z Italian version stated that Ethiopia as a protectorate of Italy, while in Amharic it stated Ethiopia's independence. Italy tried to get menelik to accept their interpretation but he refused. 3/14

#ADWA is an African victory (thread)
****************************************
Rather than a friendly alliance, fascist Italy wanted to crash #Ethiopia, its Leader of the time Emperor Minyilik and the Ethiopian people’s spirit. They tried to obtain a solid foot hold in Ethiopia.
A mistake was committed Ethiopians were treated as a "savage". It hadn't yet been understood. They thought they had to deal with local backward savages but a dormant civilization awakened and reappeared before the world!
While the fascists were flattering themselves that they subdued the king and his people he was preparing his nation to prove the contrary.
The victory of the Ethiopians at ADWA is that of all Africa and this point of view gradually became patent.

1/5 On the 1st of March 126 years ago, traditional warriors & farmers as well as women defeated a well-armed Italian army in the town of Adwa, Ethiopia. The outcome of this battle ensured Ethiopia’s independence, making it the only African country never to be colonised. #Adwa 🇪🇹
2/5 The triumph of 🇪🇹|ns at Adwa heralded hope of freedom for the Africans in Africa & beyond. It inspired Africans to embark on liberation struggles from forces of colonialism. That is why forces of resistance in the 20 century used Ethiopia as a representation of freedom. #Adwa
3/5 There were religious movements in Africa known as Ethiopianism. Also the well-known Rastafarian movement draws its inspiration from Ethiopia. Pan-Africanists such as Marcus Garvey & Bob Marley got their inspiration from association with Ethiopia because of this event at Adwa.

Last two weeks in a nutshell – a typical example of #RegimeChange

Till around mid-October the media had been covering majorly humanitarian crisis in Tigray, so much has been said so I will leave that alone. Let’s dive into events since then.
MSM follow the narratives of and quote @reda_getachew & @ProfKindeya to a point that I think they are 🇪🇹‘s correspondents for all of them, they all created stories based on their cries about Ethiopian attack on TPLF and ignored almost completely his claims their attack on Amhara.
Oct 18 – 29 the MSM headlines:
About Airstrikes in Mekelle – Reuters 7 stories, CNN 4, France24 9, Aljazeera 5, BBC 14 while about attack in Amhara – Reuters 1 story,   CNN 0, France24 0, Aljazeera 0, BBC 1 and an interview with @reda_getachew confirming ‘carnage on Amhara front’

Whenever the West plan to destabilise a certain region or need to 'ream them,' they mobilize the following entities in a concerted manner. Hence, the need to #StopWesternCrusadeAgainstEthiopia ASAP!
1. The media will start a campaign that prepares the ground for future interventions while swaying public opinion towards the needed direction. They start labeling the government as #totalitarian, if not elected and #populist, if elected.
Terms such as #genocide #ethniccleansing #famine would get bandied around. They cultivate a new "reality" on the ground.

Self-determination or #Ethiopia's Decimation? [Thread]:

An Austrian Nazi named Baron Roman Prochazka wrote a book called "Abyssinia: The Powder Barrel" (1935) before Fascist Italy's invasion of Ethiopia.

[Available for Free via @JSTOR & @tsehai: jstor.org/stable/26586238]

[1/8] Image
➡️ Prochazka frames Emperor Haile Selassie I & the Ethiopian empire as a threat to the colonial powers through collusion w/ Japan.

➡️ He proposes tribalization of #Ethiopia & pioneers the term "self-determination" in the Ethiopian context to weaken & fragment the country.

[2/8] ImageImage
➡️ He undermines the "unitary state" & names denominations: "Abyssinians proper (occupying the central part of the country), the Gallas, the Gojjams, & the Kushites of Tigré".

➡️ Colonial rule is proposed as desired to liberate people from "Tyranny of the #Amhara".

A relative traveled from #Adwa to #Mekelle today. He told my family that many people are dying from starvation.

As banks don't work, people cannot withdraw their money and save their lives and those with some grain need to line up for up to two weeks to have it milled. 1/4
There're few mills running on diesel.

Some families are desperately trying to send food from #Mekelle and other parts with access to cash. However:
1. They're impoverished and without income themselves.
2. It costs 500 birr to transport a quintal, Ex, from #Mekelle to #Adwa
3. It is risky. Friends in #Mekelle know of confiscated money and food destined to needy families, particularly in areas manned by savage #Eritrean soldiers.

The situation is catastrophic.

#AbiyAhmed is killing my people in masses by denying humanitarian relief.

#Ethiopia This is #OurAdwaMoment.

Tomorrow is the 124th anniversary of the victory of #Adwa. #Adwa was not just the history of all the people’s of Ethiopia. It was not only the victory of black people across the world who were suffering colonialism and racism.
#Adwa was the victory of good over evil, the defeat of “might makes right”. It was the proverbial victory of David over Goliath. But Adwa could & should have been more. We, the children of #Adwa must ensure their victory on the battlefield resulted in development and dignity.
#Africa’s history of wars, poverty, & the fate of its 50+ fragmented economically unviable states is too influenced by foreign powers meddling in our affairs. In Ethiopia, our national effort to build a dam that symbolizes the ambition of the entire continent for its renaissance
