The IPCC Report states that “shifts to public transport can enhance health, employment, and can elicit energy security and deliver equity.”

I commend the @bcndp for promoting a greener future by enabling transit-oriented development through #Bill16 1/ #bcpoli #Transit
Bill 16, the Transportation Amendment Act, grants the BC Transportation Financing Authority the ability to acquire and improve land that supports the development of #housing and amenities near transit stations. Known as Transit-oriented developments (TOD). 2/ #bcpoli #Transit
TODs can include: childcare centres, shops and commercial services, schools and healthcare centres, educational facilities, public gathering spaces, and recreation centres. These developments are fundamental, particularly among intersecting crises. 3/ #bcpoli #Transit

The @EU_Commission launched its #REPowerEU communication. It proposes how 🇪🇺 can become independent from #Russia's🇷🇺 fossil fuels before 2030.

Omitting #nuclear is a grave mistake. Without it, the Commission can't deliver on its promises. A thread 🧵 by @AndreiGoicea (1/12)
The #REPowerEU communication proposes solutions to 3 incredibly urgent issues which will continue to impact our economy negatively now + in the future.

The issues are:

1. #Affordability, there must be a concentrated effort to curb high energy prices for consumers and industry.
2. Energy sovereignty, our access to energy must not be disrupted by external geopolitical developments

3. Decarbonisation, relating to the proposed measures of the EU Green Deal, and the Fit for 55 package in particular

A balanced approach is needed to deal with all 3 equally!

Today’s robust #inflation data surprised in its strength and will likely persist in the short-run, and in some areas the intermediate-term, although we think that long-term the @federalreserve is largely correct in identifying real #economy price gains as mostly #transitory.
Much of today’s #inflation is due to reopening factors and supply constraints, but as #SupplyChains normalize from Covid-related shocks and #inventories rebuild, we expect much of the recent inflation will be transitory, with some stickiness in pricing pressure longer-run. Image
That may be especially the case where #inventory levels are harder to build up quickly and continued #demand from higher levels of #growth persist for at least the next year, or so.

Announcement from @fordnation sank my heart today. As an ER doctor, person of color and #Scarborough native, I feel defeated 😢. The measures are not going to get wave 3 under control. #BIPOC #ERdoc @SHNcares @torontolife @JustinTrudeau @SCMirror 1/
When I landed as an #immigrant in #Canada, my life started in #Scarborough. My parents (#heros) struggled to find jobs that matched their education. That didn't stop them from working hard / hustling even if it meant 2 jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. 2/
My family lived in an apt building that had mostly racialized/middle-low income families (#affordability). Not much social distancing when large crowds wait for elevators (#EssentialWorkers) or use the shared laundry facilities. This pandemic brings back those vivid memories 3/

Some thoughts on that @UBS bubble index report that came out the other day - where Toronto was the 2nd highest city (biggest risk) in the 🌎. Or at least the 24 selective cities covered. (Chart via @AxiosVisuals ) /1 Image
First of all, something I haven't seen reported was that Toronto's risk number has actually fallen the last couple of years from 2.12 > 1.95 > 1.86. /2 Image
Toronto's ranking was #1 in 2017 and #3 in 2018 (behind Hong Kong and Munich). Big reason Toronto has climbed in the rankings is that other top cities have reset. Graphic relates to 2016 rankings. Could still be some air to be let out of Toronto's prices. /3 Image

Here's the Toronto AREA (emphasis mine) part of RBC's Housing Market Affordability figures, just released. As RBC notes, pretty steady since 2017 (except condos rising).
Aggregate: 50.2
Single Family Detached: 58.0
Condo apt: 43.3
#affordability /1 Image
Report says "The odds of a material improvement are low in the period ahead. Current trends—the steady recovery in market activity, drawdown in inventories and gradual heating up of property values—in fact, argue for further slight deterioration." /2
Number is the proportion of median pre-tax household income required to service the cost of mortgage payments (principal and interest) + property taxes + utilities based on the AVG market price. Assumes 25% down at 5-year fixed with 25 year amort. /3

It’s the headline that just won’t die: Young Canadians can’t afford to buy a home. #housing #affordability #millennials #basementlife
The news is a retell but @GenSqueeze crunched the numbers to show, again, the gap between what the average home costs in Canada and what a typical 25 to 34-year-old can afford is massive. bit.ly/2ZjOZwt
The national housing affordability gap is bleak.

Next Wednesday @CityofVancouver staff report back to #Council on ramping up our #ClimateAction, in line with the #IPCC science and in response to the #ClimateEmergency. Here’s my breakdown of the recommendations 👇
This #ClimateEmergency report outlines 6 Big Moves for Council to direct staff to pursue & come back w. comprehensive/costed plans. Plus 53 Accelerated Actions to move on now. The targets are strong & won’t be easy. This is what governing in line with the science looks like.
Big Move 1: By 2030, 90% of people will live within an easy walk/roll of their daily needs (we’re at 45%). Focused on land-use & complete n'hoods, it would ⬇️ 153,000 tonnes carbon/year, while creating ⬆️ housing choices, ⬆️ social interaction, and supporting local businesses.

Thank you @CMRobJohnson for all the work you've done to push through #Mandatory #Housing #Affordability in our city. It's been an honor to work alongside you as work together to make Seattle a more inclusive and welcoming city.
Thank you @CMTMosqueda for co-sponsoring the childcare amendment with me! A report released by King County’s Women’s Advisory Board earlier this month confirms what we know: one of the biggest contributors to this cost is how expensive it is to bring #childcare facilities online.
I believe #MHA will be ONE important tool to address this – as we build more affordable housing, this also means more #affordable #childcare facilities being included in their design to reach more neighborhoods across the city.

We are in this together. And we applaud the vision and commitment of these 5 health systems – their leadership and the thousands of providers that care for patients.
