🧵#Canada's politicians have been talking a lot about #affordablehousing.

But, to quote @ronmortgageguy "All Levels Of Government Talk About AFFORDABLE Housing But None Of Them Will Ever Say Houses Prices Must Come DOWN"

Why is this? Could there be a conflict of interest?
Below is a list of #Ontario politicians that meet 1 or more of the following criteria:

1) #residentialrental property that they earn an income from
2) residential rental property without disclosing any income
3) non-residential property
4) other involvement in #realestate

Do you know why your city looks the way it does?

From office buildings to single family homes, #zoning defines what is built and where, including #affordablehousing (or the lack of). But these laws can be difficult to understand. We have a solution. 1/9…
Researchers Matt Mleczko and Matthew Desmond have created the National Zoning and Land Use Database, which allows us to understand how restrictive thousands of cities are in terms of what kind of housing they allow… 2/9
The database includes key measures to understand how zoning works, including, but not limited to, minimum lot sizes, number of units allowed, how much parking is required per unit, and how tall buildings can be. 3/9

A pt. I cared for in ED:

I’m hungry & tired doc. I’ve got no home & eat only what I can find.

G - what about the shelters?

They’re not safe for an old guy like me. Can’t go there.

G - where do u sleep?

Anywhere. I ride the train until I get kicked out then I walk.

G - our winter is really cold, that’s so hard, I’m sorry

“Ha! You’re telling me. I find giant empty warm buildings all the time but can’t get in. I just need a warm place so I dont freeze. Nothing big. 400sq feet would be great.

I look for work but am told I’m too old.”
“I’ve got a skilled trade & >20yrs of exp but can’t get work cause they just throw us old guys away.

People think the #homeless are worthless but there’s kindness on the street. Everyone shares the little they have. Everyone just trying to survive.”

Attending #Charlottesville Zoning Ordinance work session with City Council and Planning Commission Reserved #SeatsAvailable
Height questions - under the new ordinance - the measurement is both feet and stories. If it is 5 stories and 100 feet, it is still 5 stories. There is some wiggle room in the heigh The goal of this double standard is to limit the number of short stories that can be "crammed" in
A secondary goal of the standard is to encourage a variety of floor heights and building heights.

First figure is the Block Plan as submitted by the Landowners Group. It's not in compliance with the PPS, Greenbelt Plan, CAA.
The second figure is the Secondary Plan approved by Council in 2019, reaffirmed by the tribunal approval in 2021 (OPA 50) 2/x…
Landowners never had any attention of complying w/ the Secondary Plan as approved by Council & reaffirmed by 2021 tribunal decision. Always planned illegal #Greenbelt parks...As is evident by this 2017 figure 3/x

@writenrun @TimHoustonNS @CH_ABeswick @NS_Justice @nspc I recently heard @CTVSteveMurphy tell @TVeinotteShow that Tim Houston is a lot more like Stephen McNeil than most people realize.

In other words, they're both "my way or the highway" kinda' guys. #WhiteMalePrivilege
@writenrun @TimHoustonNS @CH_ABeswick @NS_Justice @nspc @CTVSteveMurphy @TVeinotteShow @skimber The new Tim Houston has morphed into the old Stephen McNeill: arrogant, angry, self-righteous. (paywalled) #nspoli #nspc…
@writenrun @TimHoustonNS @CH_ABeswick @NS_Justice @nspc @CTVSteveMurphy @TVeinotteShow @skimber Last week, @MLABarbAdams announced plans to build 600 new #LTC beds, doubling the number under development.

Good news, but… Is it playing politics to note that most of those beds will not open until 2025, the year the Tim Houston govt. is scheduled to seek a new mandate? Image

@stevesi28838948 @mikepompeo @WHCOS Well, the Cuban experience, including the Cuban Adjustment Act, basically guaranteed the longevity of the Castro Communist regime on the island, since virtually all of the opposition left.

And America learned from that.

@stevesi28838948 @mikepompeo @WHCOS DeSantis has asked whether it’s America’s responsibility to welcome anyone in the entire world who wants to live here.

If so, forget @fightfor15 and #affordablehousing.

If sovereign independent nations make their own policy choices, they own the results. Thank you.

@BrianEntin Yes, and @Ilhan unrealistically thinks that America should welcome unlimited numbers of undocumented foreign citizens abandoning BIPOC-led home countries.

Forget @fightfor15 and #AffordableHousing, obviously.

@BrianEntin @Ilhan @fightfor15 Poverty has never been a ground for US asylum nor @UN @Refugees status.

@MarkLevineNYC @KateBolduan Well, considering that you think that America can - and must - welcome unlimited numbers of undocumented foreign citizens abandoning their BIPOC-led home countries, hiring international criminal human trafficking organizations, etc., well, time to step up to your principles.

A hot take that shouldn’t be a hot take:

Simply raising the #OW and #ODSP rates isn’t good enough.
Some thoughts:
1) If raising the rates is an interim measure towards a #UBI #GLBI, fine. But #OW and #ODSP are riddled with barriers and were not meant to create a living wage.
What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.

MEMO TO: @hfxgov councillors.

Can surplus land be sold for $1.00 to accommodate #AffordableHousing? Can permit fees, subdivision fees, and zone amendment fees be waived when affordable housing projects are in the making? #CBRM #HRM #Halifax @CBRMGov…
We are grateful to Coun. Gordon MacDonald @tobinroader for keeping affordable housing on council agenda. As has been pointed out around the council table, affordable housing is not a municipal responsibility.

Thankfully though this doesn’t mean it can’t be a municipal priority. Image

Will ⁦@GeoffMacLellan⁩’s #affordablehousing task force do anything about #REIT’s?

REIT’s own or invest in income-producing real estate & distribute profits to their shareholders. Many are traded publicly on the stock market. #nspoli #Halifax…
2) @MichaelTGorman Nova Scotia's DM of housing said Wed. that non-profit housing will have to be "dramatically" expanded to address the province's housing crunch.

(Thus far both Geoff MacLellan and Tim Houston only seem interested in ‘market’ solutions.)…
3) One of the benefits of non-market housing is that the units remain affordable for the long term.

That's a key difference from many private developments that get govt. funding to include a handful of affordable units. #HRM @hfxgov @MikeSavageHFX @dubehalifax1 @HRMLovelace Image

Following on the second most exciting news in Ohio (@Bengals #WhoDey #RuleTheJungle) we’re using this week’s #GOPCThread to look closer at the land use implications of the recent #IntelOhio announcement.
On Jan 21, 2022, @GovMikeDeWine + @Intel officially announced the chip manufacturer would build at least 2 semi-conductor chip factories in New Albany, a suburb 25 minutes north east of downtown #Columbus.
The facilities will be built on undeveloped land, contiguous to the current New Albany International Business Park. The city has annexed much of the land from Jersey Township in Licking Co. (map courtesy of #NewAlbanyInternationalBusinessPark)

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer I think one key issue is the fact that the same people who want America and Americans to welcome unlimited numbers of undocumented foreign citizens, abandoning their BIPOC-led sovereign independent home countries . . .

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer . . . and hiring international criminal human trafficking organizations to guide them to our southwest border to make questionable asylum claims, then to live, at best, semi-documented, in what they constantly insist is a horribly and unredeemably racist country . . .

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer . . . . and at the same time constantly complaining about @fightfor15 and #AffordableHousing, when an ample supply of relatively unskilled labor competes with US-based including American workers who now have leverage to negotiate and get a union.
