ICYMI—the CDC put out a nationwide warning about an outbreak of enterovirus #D68 last week. Between all the DOJ investigations & royal news, you probably missed it. But hospital pediatric beds are filling up with with this respiratory outbreak.

Recently I've heard from collaborators in the US & Europe that #Enterovirus #D68 #EVD68 cases are on the rise.
EV-D68 is what I worked on pre-pandemic, & hope to go back to.
A significant autumn 2022 wave has been a recent concern.

#EVD68 is a Picornavirus - a diverse family of viruses. And Enteroviruses are pretty diverse themselves: from Poliovirus, which can cause serious neurological illness, to Rhinovirus - what's behind the common cold 🤧 (and even more in between).

One of the most notable things about #EVD68 is that in Europe & North America it's historically had biennial autumn outbreaks: in 2014, 2016, & 2018. Also predicted in 2020... but that didn't happen due to pandemic!

1. Europe is seeing an upswing in cases of an infection that has been linked to a polio-like phenomenon called #AFM — acute flaccid myelitis — according to a report today in @Eurosurveillanc. Enterovirus D68 is thought to trigger AFM in some kids. eurosurveillance.org/content/10.280…
2. From 2014 on, the US & Europe experienced cases of #AFM that left dozens of children dealing with some lingering paralysis after they had cold-like symptoms. AFM cases peaked every 2 years; but in socially-distance 2020, there was no surge. statnews.com/2021/02/04/doc…
3. Authorities in the US have been watching for #AFM this fall, figuring the loosening of Covid precautions & the return to in-person schooling could result in a spike in cases. So far this year that hasn't happened. Fewer cases than in 2020, even. cdc.gov/acute-flaccid-…

2/9 Graphene is almost transparent and quenches fluorescence in a range of ~40 nm. Fluorescence intensity or fluorescence lifetime of single molecules directly tell you the distance of a molecule to the surface. Differences in the z-direction as small as 2.9 nm are resolved.
3/9 Dynamics with graphene energy transfer (GET). We use GET to visualize motion on top of a graphene surface and determine the timescale of fluctuations via autocorrelation analysis.

2) This event happens every fall. Sometimes worse than others. Children from around the country come down with numbness, sometimes tingling, then paralysis in their extremities. It spreads.
3) It usually starts in the legs, then moves up the spinal column, sometimes reaching the muscles that control the expansion and contraction of their lungs, causing artificial respiration to be needed. This is what we use now instead of iron lungs.
