Let’s shift our focus from Spike to #Nucleocapsid protein!

A new study demonstrates that genetic mutations outside the Spike are also key components in #SARS2 continued adaptation to human infection.

The #R203K-#G204R mutation is sufficient to enhance replication, fitness, & pathogenesis of #SARS2. Importantly, the R203K-G204R mutation increases #nucleocapsid phosphorylation, providing a molecular basis for these phenotypes.
Notably, an analogous #alanine substitution mutant also increases #SARS2 fitness and phosphorylation, suggesting that infection is enhanced through ablation of the ancestral ‘RG’ motif. A new Preprint by @TheMenacheryLab 👇

My recent DNA #nucleobase etymology thread turned out to be surprisingly popular. So now let's do the amino acids -- #HematologyTweetstory 12. This pretty chart of the #aminoacids is from “BioNinja”:…
Knowing word origins isn't essential to using terms well, but these histories can be interesting and illuminating. So, while you may not be a bodybuilder💪🏋️‍♂️🏋️‍♀️ who eats amino acids to bulk up, you can read #HematologyTweetstory 12 to build up your “body of knowledge". 😉
