As in August, most shipwrecks that happened in September were not recognised by any authority. With the exception of a few, we only heard of these tragic deaths at sea because traumatised survivors or brave fishermen reached out to #AlarmPhone to make their voices heard.

IOM reported that on 14/09 a boat was rescued by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. They arrived too late for 22 people who died after the boat capsized. The 45 survivors were imprisoned in the detention centre of Zawya.

🆘This morning, #AlarmPhone was alerted by some relatives about a boat with ~10 persons onboard, which departed on Monday night from Bab El Oued, in #Algeria. We informed authorities today at 3:20pm. @salvamentogov, the launch of a rescue operation is urgently needed!

We finally managed to talk to the so-called Libyan Coastguard, who we informed at 1.15am. They said they are aware of the case but no rescue has been sent.

🔸Relatives of people who went missing in the last week shipwrecks keep contacting #AlarmPhone to ask what happened to them & if anyone is looking for them. Unfortunately, it is impossible to give answers. We can only show their pictures to the survivors to ask about their fate.
As with every shipwreck, it is difficult to verify the identities of those who were on board. For the shipwreck of February 9 2020, only after months of research with relatives & friends were we able to retrieve the identities of 60 out of the 91 missing persons. #SayTheirNames
This work & this uncertainty is exhausting for those who miss their loved ones. They cannot start grieving until they have answers, and often clear answers never come. This is an additional form of violence perpetrated by the border regime, which makes black lives ungrievable.

Yesterday, Alarm Phone was alerted by a boat in distress after they had left from Libya. Our phone connection was bad. We were not able to gather all needed information and could not verify their position beyond doubt. Authorities are informed.

A relative got in touch with #AlarmPhone & provided the position of the boat in distress. According to the position received, it should be a few nautical miles from the Italian SAR zone. The people in distress told us that their engine is not working & water is entering the boat!
We are glad that at 12.39 CEST #MoonBird spotted the wooden boat that is in contact with #AlarmPhone, and was able to confirm its position South of #Lampedusa (35d07N, 012d27E) & that the boat is adrift. @guardiacostiera & @Armed_Forces_MT - the 57 people need rescue now!
