Here’s a Hot Take that’s probably also going to be an Unpopular Opinion: While overcrowded, noisy & flawed in key ways, #AlitaBattleAngel is the first US live action anime/manga adaptation that feels like it deserved to be made.

I had fun & wanted to know what happened next.
I want to write a piece on why Hollywood live-action anime/manga have historically been awful failures and why #AlitaBattleAngel *kind of* succeeds (and points the way to how future adaptations could succeed better). @IndraniNY, interested?
Note: The eyes were a part of why #AlitaBattleAngel worked. I would never suggest doing it as a rule for anime/manga adaptations, but for THIS story, which ultimately is all about the uncanny valley (!), Rodriguez’s controversial decision paid off.

I love how Yukito Kishiro still maintains a personal website!

No Twitter! No Facebook! Just a beautiful, informative, fun to browse HTML site full of awesome illustations and GREAT insights into his work!

Did you know? In 2011, Yukito Kishiro, creator of Battle Angel Alita, did this TOTALLY AWESOME cover for the album "Revoltest" by cyberpunk techno metal band Valkilly!!! (@val_staff)

Get the full album here!…

If you love #BattleAngelAlita/#Gunnm you should follow Valkilly (@val_staff)! The band's concept is that they are Earth's strongest cyborgs. They credit Yukito Kishiro's classic comic as their main inspiration!

Kishiro's awesome cover for Valkilly's 2011 album "Revoltest" (Left) reminds me of this RAD Space Karate illustration he did for Ultra Jump in 2009! (Right)

I know this is gonna sound nitpicky, but I'm disappointed that the Damascus blade will probably be a sword in the movie. That's the one thing it never was in the comics. It feels too heroic/romantic for Alita, whose fighting style is extremely utilitarian.
The thin sleek blade doesn't suit Alita. She's already visually sleek/elegant/pretty/cute. The harsh pragmatic form of the damascus blade provides a nice visual contrast and also belies her indomitable inner character.
I still hope the movie is good though. If they just follow the basic storyline, the core is SO GOOD that I'm certain it'll do really well. And I hope that brings Kishiro mounds of cash and brings more people to the comics :D
