Central to Alzheimer's pathology is a phenomenon known as brain hypometabolism. Let me explain better what that term means. 🧵 (1/25) #alzheimers #AD #neurotwitter
Brain hypometabolism refers to a state of reduced metabolic activity in the brain, characterized by a decreased uptake and utilization of glucose - the primary #energy source for brain cells. (2/25)
This disastrous metabolic slowdown is not just a mere lack of energy, although that would be devastating enough. It triggers a cascade of effects that impair neuronal function and disrupts communication between #brain cells. (3/25)

One in five people suffer from hearing loss

1. Yes, you heard it right.
This information was obtained by a study published in The Lancet journal in Mar 2021.
An estimated 1·57 billion people globally had hearing loss in 2019.
doi.org/10.1016/S0140-…
#MedTwitter
2. Although hearing loss is common in old ages, globally 70 million children aged 0–15 years also live with this condition. Otitis media and meningitis are risk factors for hearing loss in children.
38% of people with hearing loss were less than 50 years old.
#HearingLoss
3. When unaddressed, childhood hearing loss can affect spoken language development, literacy skills, and education, which might affect cognition and social wellbeing.
Older people with hearing loss have a higher risk of developing #dementia, including #AlzheimersDisease.

2.5 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year.

@CDCgov
TBI has been regarded as one of the strongest environmental risk factors for #dementia, and for #AlzheimersDisease in particular.

Our perspective article on cognitive outcome measures for #AlzheimersDisease clinical trials is out! doi.org/10.1002/alz.12… We aimed to provide a framework to advance the design and implementation of (more) suitable measures to assess clinical efficacy in early AD trials.(1/4)👇
Based on lessons learned from previous AD trials, and leveraging the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology, we provide recommendations to evaluate performance-based cognitive tests for AD clinical trials (Table 2).(2/4)
This framework can be applied when selecting cognitive items/tests for a clinical outcome assessment to evaluate putative treatments, after taking into account factors such as the hypothesized mode of action and target population (e.g. clinical stage) (Table 2/Figure 1).(3/4)

It's so hard not to be resentful and hold a grudge when your Alzheimer's stricken mother says things that emotionally wound you.

It's hard to be the one that remembers and is haunted by what's said long after she's forgotten. And you feel like an asshole for any resentment >
or anger you have because of what's said to you... because you know it isn't her fault.

But it still fucking hurts.

Fuck #AlzheimersDisease
It really fucking sucks. For family, for friends, for caregivers, and for the afflicted.
She's been having occasional delusions, but now the paranoia is kicking in on top of it. Somehow in the span of fifteen minutes I went from her telling me how much she appreciates me and how kind and considerate I am, to being talked to and treated like I was spawned directly >

This Mendelian randomization study provides evidence that genetically predicted walking may reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Genetically predicted higher levels of walking were found to decrease the risk of AD.
- Interestingly, the study failed to find any associations between genetically predicted overall activity, sedentary behavior, and moderate-intensity activity with AD.

In my first and only basic science research experience, I was complicit in scientific fraud.

There was no fabrication of data, per se. No doctoring of images. It was subtle experimental misconduct, and certainly an anomaly in the scientific community. I assumed.)

I had a 4-week summer research position when I was in college. The project had something to do with Na/K channels in pulmonary epithelial cells.

Honestly, I didn’t really understand it then, so I certainly wouldn’t be able to explain it now.

It was a very small lab. I think I met the PI twice… once on my first day, and once for an exit interview a month later. I remember that he wore a little button on his white coat that said, “Science: Invest in the Quest!”

In the United States, an estimated 5.4 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This figure is growing rapidly with the ageing population.

1
One of them was Steve Newport. His wife, Mary Newport, was a doctor. Dr. Mary learned that her husband had severe Alzheimer's disease.

When the doctor examined her husband at the hospital, he asked Steve to paint a clock. Instead, he drew a few circles and

then drew a few figures without any logic. It was not like a clock at all!.

The doctor pulled her aside and said: "Your husband is already on the verge of severe Alzheimer's disease!"

It turned out that it was a test of whether a person had Alzheimer's disease.

Useful for assessing whether the failures of CETP inhibitors are more likely due to off-target or on-target effects and for directing future development...

👉MR analysis suggests CEPT inhibition could be useful4reducing coronary hard disease risk (OR=0.95) risk & thus further drug development may be warranted

Today is #purpleday. I was diagnosed with #epilepsy at the age of 28 after having simple partial seizures for years. I had tonic-clonic seizures -- what used to be called grand mal seizures -- in my sleep, and never knew.
This was diagnosed in a very classy way -- I woke up with a bruised forehead and a broken toilet seat. Things like stroke and brain cancer had to be eliminated. I had just moved to NYC and started writing for @CBSRadio. Bad timing.
There are more than 40 different types of seizures. They are very personal. They have different 'triggers'. Mine are triggered by exhaustion. I had to stop working overnights, and I avoid early mornings, which is difficult in a business that starts at 3am and goes all night.

At the UofG press conference for the FIELD study results, published today @NEJM, @UofGMVLS’s @WillStewNeuro says ‘This is the largest study to date looking at the incidence of neurodegenerative disease in any sport not just former professional footballers’
#WorldChangingGlasgow Image
Commenting on the findings from this landmark UofG led study @WillStewNeuro says: ‘Although former pro football players had a higher risk of death from neurodegenerative disease, they are less likely to die of other common diseases, such as heart disease and some cancers’. Image
‘Looking in detail at neurodegenerative disease subtypes, the study revealed risk ranged from a 5-fold increase in #AlzheimersDisease, through an approximately 4-fold increase in #MND, to a 2-fold risk for #Parkinsons Disease, compared to population controls’ @WillStewNeuro
