First introduced in the 1950s, the U.S. Army soon adopted the UH-1 helicopter for use in a variety of roles. Its original designation was "HU" for "helicopter, utility" (hence the sobriquet "HUey"), which was later changed to "UH" for "utility helicopter."

The UH-1 and its variants were the backbone of the Army’s new airmobile doctrine and performed a variety of roles. These included close air support gunships, assault aircraft for infantrymen, basic transport functions, and "air ambulances" for medical evacuation.

There were approximately 100 U.S. military nurses in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded on 8 DEC 1941. When the enemy captured Camp John Hay and took two nurses prisoner, GEN Douglas MacArthur ordered all nurses to the island of Corregidor in Manila Bay. @USArmy @TRADOC
As Filipino-American forces prepared their desperate last stand on the Bataan Peninsula, two hospitals were established with medical staffs that included 45 nurses. They treated soldiers who suffered combat wounds as well as tropical diseases. #WomensHistoryMonth #MilitaryHistory

The Army Medical Specialist Corps is one of six Army medical corps established by Congress to serve under the direction of the Army Surgeon General.
The Corps is composed of occupational therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, and physician assistants in the Regular Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. They develop dual careers, as officers in the Army and as professionals in the above named medical fields.
On 16 April 1947 the Women’s Medical Specialist Corps, comprised of women officers was established by Public Law 80-36. The law was amended in 1955 to allow commissioning of males and the corps was renamed the Army Medical Specialist Corps (AMSC).
