Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple ❤🇮🇳
Sri #Meenakshi Amman Temple, Tamil Nadu In the ancient temple city of #Madurai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, on the southern bank of Vaigai river, stands the magnificent Meenakshi #Amman Temple. It is dedicated to
Meenakshi (Sanskrit term meaning 'fish eyed'), a form of #Goddess Parvati, consort of Lord #Shiva, worshipped here as Lord Sundaresvara. The goddess Meenakshi is the principal deity of the temple, unlike most Shiva temples in #South India where Shiva is the principal deity.

Is coding for everyone?
Can learning to code make you more employable?

We ask @amasad, founder of the incredible @replit, which is teaching millions worldwide to code and build powerful products!

saifedean.com/podcast/125-le…
Find out how @amasad learning to code in #Amman, #Jordan gave him the idea for @replit, which went from an open source project to a start-up with a huge ecosystem of active developers, which turned down a $1b acquisition offer in 2019!

We also discuss @amasad's journey with bitcoin, why he integrated into @replit, and why he thinks programmable money and lightning are important innovations.

With the prospect of imminent, dramatic rises in food and energy prices, I am struck by two dynamics in #Jordan.

The deep concern by experts and the complete lack of concern by decision-makers.
The official line: #Jordan has overcome more difficult challenges in the past, its people are steadfast, the kingdom is strong and we will overcome future challenges.

Basically, their plan is #Jordanian exceptionalism.
The constant bail-outs by Gulf states and the #US (as well as aid from #EU and IMF, World Bank loans) has shielded #Jordan from the harsh economic and geopolitical realities that have devastated nearby countries and has created a false sense of security in #Amman.

THREAD: In mid October, media sources reported that the Syrian Government will dismantle the 🇷🇺- backed 8th Brigade, which currently holds sway in portions of #Dara Governorate, and integrate it into the Government’s own command structure. 1/7
The 8th Brigade’s dissolution spells the end of an era in southern #Syria. The move is the most consequential to date in the Syrian Government’s continuing efforts to quell resistance in hotbeds of unrest in the restive south. 2/7
The 8th Brigade has been a key player in the region since its reconciliation in 2018, and the military formation offered hope to former opposition fighters who preferred to stay in their communities rather than displace to northern Syria 3/7

I love it how veteran American journalists are now re-discovering #Jordan after a decades-long absence and writing as if it is still 1980, 1991 or 1999.

#الأردن #الامير_حمزه
It highlights a deep lack of understanding of how the #Jordan has evolved under the reign of King Abdullah.

No, East Bank tribes are no longer a monolith and neither are its leaders. A new political-economic elite have risen. Even balance of power in old institutions has shifted
People seem to also missing the point that the #Jordan opposition has been politically decimated or coopted.

There are no real political actors on the ground. Even social actors such as tribes have been divided (many say, on purpose by the state).

If you’ve ever visited #Amman, you’ve definitely caught a glimpse of the colossal Temple of ‘Hercules’ standing tall on ancient acropolis. The architecture is amazing, but who was the temple actually for & was it ever finished?

#Archaeology #MuseumsUnlocked #ClassicsTwitter
The Amman citadel is an amazing site & I hope this thread inspires some visits! Occupied since the Neolithic period, the citadel is marked in some way by every phase of Jordan’s history.

It’s also home to an amazing archaeological museum, featuring an even wider range of finds!
The temple sits a conventional Roman podium on the southern end of the fortified citadel, and would have measured 30x24m. The most impressive aspect of the building is its vertical scale: each of its columns rises some 10m atop the stylobate, making it incredibly imposing!

I have read the entire #Israel-#Palestinian peace plan and my advice to revelers is not to pop the champagne anytime soon -- "peace" is not around the corner. Here's a quick assessment. 1/11
I congratulate the plan's authors for injecting some realism into conventional views of this conflict. It is realistic for the Jordan River to be Israel's security barrier. It is realistic for hundreds of thousands of Israelis in West Bank not to be forced to relocate. 2/11
But they took those & other principles and stretched them beyond all recognition. #Israeli security control of #JordanValley became full sovereignty; not uprooting hundreds of thousands of settlers became not uprooting even 1 settler. There are no Solomonic judgments here. 3/11

The media is *the* platform of choice for US officials trying to coerce a reversal in #Syria policy -- the reality is more complex & less promising.

My latest for @politico, questions durability of #America's presence in #Syria vis-a-vis #ISIS's future:

politico.com/magazine/story…
@politico (1) A long-term U.S. presence in al-Tanf depends heavily on #Jordan's support.

But the reliability of that support remains uncertain, given #Amman's doubling investment in ties with #Assad's #Syria & pursuit of renewed trade links.

Have we got that assurance? I don't think so.
@politico (2) For now, #Trump has permitted a "residual force" in #Syria on the condition that it convinces EU allies to (a) stay & (b) expand their presence.

As of today, (a) is possible but (b) is an outright No.

That means the status quo, which we know #Trump opposes altogether.

#Russia, #Israel, #US & #Jirdan eventually negotiated departure of 422 #WhiteHelmets & their families out of #Syria (initial number was reportedly 827).#Canada, #Germany, #UK also involved in talks, each agreed to host them. Some 3750 activists remain in SYR.
#Moscow reportedly didnt allow direct passage of #WhiteHelmets to #Jordan (hence evacuation thru #Israel)while #Amman agreed to temporarily accept 'em only after guarantees frm West states they'd host them.#Canada to host 250 (activists+families),#Germany -8 activists +?families
In #Moscow, #WhiteHelmets evacuation said to be a part of #HelsinkiSummit agreements on #Syria, #GolanHeights. The very operation was thoroughly coordinated by #Israel's Lieberman & #Russia's Shoigu as well as discussed by #Putin & @netanyahu in latest phone call.

The battle of south Syria will be divide in two parts: the first part (Suweida/east Daraa) will continue without obstacles from players involved (#USA and #Israel).
The 2d part is still observing complications (the one including #ISIS - Jaish Khaled Bin al-Waleed) in #Quneitra.
The first part (Suweida/east Daraa) is aiming to open the #Damascus-#Amman road at Naseeb crossing. This will give a fresh air to the economy of both #Syria and #Jordan. The battle is expected to end in less than 2 months.

For the second part on the Israeli borders, #USA said it clearly is shall not pull out of al-Tanf today, tomorrow or in the near future.
The Israeli bombing last night close to #Damascus airport is due to the second part of the ops in south #Syria.
