Today and tomorrow, @G7 #Energy ministers meet in #Japan – a country, often considered a “laggard” on #energytransition. What is 🇯🇵’s energy system like and why is it so reluctant to step up #decarbonisation of its economy? A 🧵 1/19

env.go.jp/en/earth/g7/20…
The “usual” arguments by the 🇯🇵 government when confronted with lack of both action and ambition on #energytransition:
1. #Japan is resource-poor
2. Japan’s geography limits #renewables build-out
3. Technologies & Innovation will solve the transition

How true are they? 2/19
Japan is indeed poor in some resources, most notably #fossilfuels. Fossil fuel based, its energy system is 88% dependent on #oil, #LNG and #coal imports. It has one of the least self-sufficient energy systems, dependent on #oil & gas from #MiddleEast & #coal from #Australia. 3/19 ImageImage

🚨Study on future options and costs of energy imports for Germany🚨

Our study comparing future options for energy imports to Germany and their costs has finally passed peer-review and is now published.

A thread 🧵
🔑Key findings

- Germany has many options for import
- No one-size-fits-all: Costs strongly depend on what and from where you import
- Costs for renewable alternatives and prices for fossil counterparts converged in last year

There's lots of justified concern about the #BlackSeaGrainInitiative after Russia suspended its participation.

I'd just note that (i) this sort of crisis with the deal was always quite likely; and (ii) the deal is not necessarily dead. [1/5]

When the #BlackSeaGrainInitiative was only a twinkle in the UNSG's eye in May, I told @TheEconomist that Russia could agree to a deal and then throw up obstacles to implementation. [2/5] economist.com/europe/2022/05…
There is a long history of stop-start diplomacy with Russia @UN over humanitarian initiatives - especially in #Syria - during which Moscow often threatens to halt cooperation entirely and then relents.

(I wrote about this for @ecfr years ago: ecfr.eu/wp-content/upl…). [3/5]

🚨BRO🚨
It has come to my attention that some well-meaning bros think shifting to #Ammonia fuel for shipping is a good idea for decarbonization. After all, #Ammonia = NH3 is a zero-carbon fuel, right?

NO, BRO, THIS IS A BAD IDEA.

Let me dumb this down for @BrosForDecarb
🧵👇
We humans are causing this climate change problem by overusing carbon. Do you really want to fix it by overusing nitrogen?

THINK AGAIN.

Nitrogen pollution is yet another global-scale environmental problem and ...
... we’re already more than thrice over the Earth’s capacity for how much nitrogen we can dump in the ecosystem. Imagine dumping another 5x that amount from shipping fuels ALONE.

#Ammonia is harder to gauge, with bears out in force due to sufficient supply. High stocks and demand destruction continue to wreak havoc in #phosphates, #potash and #sulphuric acid, but #sulphur prices appear to have hit a bottom following weeks of steep collapses

⚡️⚡️ There had been an #ammonia leak at #Sumykhimprom, says the head of #Sumy Regional State Administration.

The radius of impact is about 5 km. Ammonia is a colorless toxic gas. It is lighter than air, so shelters and ground floors of houses must be used for protection.
As of 5:00 ammonia leakage was insignificant. Rescuers are working to precipitate the ammonia cloud. There is no threat to the population. According to preliminary information, there are no victims or injuries.

#UkraineKonflikt ?

For those who ask:
“Why does Ukraine matter? “

How the nation of #Ukraine ranks:

1st in #Europe in proven recoverable reserves of #uranium ores;

2nd place in Europe and 10th place in the world in terms of #titanium ore reserves;

1/1 Image
2nd place in the world in terms of explored reserves of #manganese ores (2.3 billion tons, or 12% of the world's reserves);

2nd largest iron ore reserves in the world (30 billion tons);

2nd place in Europe in terms of #mercury ore reserves;

1/2
3rd place in Europe (13th place in the world) in shale #gas reserves
(22 trillion cubic meters)

4th in the world by the total value of natural resources;
7th place in the world in #coal reserves
(33.9 billion tons)

This is #Ukraine 🇺🇦 pictured on top of a map of #Europe. It's the biggest European country, bigger than France. Donbass' territories occupied by Russia are as big as Switzerland.

What is happening now is not a small local conflict, but a hazard for the whole world.

#Climate needs #electrification AND #hydrogen.
Both compete for #renewableelectricity, policy and infrastructure support. Policy makers have to take decisions, secure expectations, avoid further fossil lock-in
Our paper offers guidance.

#efuels(right) replace fossils without the end-use transformation required by (direct) #electrification(left)
This promises to make combustion technologies and fossil infrastructure part of the climate solution;
yet, shifting the burden to the supply side has limitations…
3/8
#Efuels require 2 – 14 times more (renewable) electricity than a direct #electrification (e.g. electric cars are five times more efficient)
Remember, (growing) renewable power capacity is far from fully meeting only today’s electricity demand.

Our review paper on recent advances in solid oxide cells for #electrolysis has been published today in @ScienceMagazine ( science.sciencemag.org/content/370/65… ) Here are the main points from the paper (a thread, 1/15) 👇
Electrolysis (using electricity to drive chemical reactions) is a key technology for tackling #CO2emissions in the areas of our economy that are difficult to #decarbonize: heavy transport (planes, ships, trucks) and the production of chemicals, steel, cement, and glass. (2/15)
For heavy transport, e.g. large planes or container ships, direct electrification (batteries) is not an option due to low energy density of batteries compared to liquid fuels. Climate-friendly fuels can be made by combining electrolysis with chemical synthesis (e.g. FT). (3/15)

"Development is not the big issue here – both on the engine and fuel side. The problem is the business case. So far it makes no financial sense to build zero emission ships." – Jakob Steffensen, @DFDSGroup Head of Innovation & Technology #IVIW2020 Image

#Aviation contributes 2-3% of CO2 emissions, but takes decarbonising very seriously. There's no silver bullet to eliminate our impact, we need a series of solutions: batteries; fuel cell tech; & H2 combustion engines—a #renewables surrogate.”—@Airbus’s Glenn Llewellyn #IVIW2020 Image
