Japan is indeed poor in some resources, most notably #fossilfuels. Fossil fuel based, its energy system is 88% dependent on #oil, #LNG and #coal imports. It has one of the least self-sufficient energy systems, dependent on #oil & gas from #MiddleEast & #coal from #Australia. 3/19

Our review paper on recent advances in solid oxide cells for #electrolysis has been published today in @ScienceMagazine ( science.sciencemag.org/content/370/65… ) Here are the main points from the paper (a thread, 1/15) 👇
Electrolysis (using electricity to drive chemical reactions) is a key technology for tackling #CO2emissions in the areas of our economy that are difficult to #decarbonize: heavy transport (planes, ships, trucks) and the production of chemicals, steel, cement, and glass. (2/15)
For heavy transport, e.g. large planes or container ships, direct electrification (batteries) is not an option due to low energy density of batteries compared to liquid fuels. Climate-friendly fuels can be made by combining electrolysis with chemical synthesis (e.g. FT). (3/15)

Our first keynote speaker is Bill David, Professor of Materials Chemistry @OxfordChemistry, Senior Fellow @RutherfordApLab and Fellow of @St_Catz. He has made significant contributions to the development of neutron and X-ray powder diffraction.
He was part of the team that developed the first rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery, and following his discovery of new ammonia-decomposition catalysts, his research is in materials that facilitate safe and effective utilisation of #ammonia as an energy vector for energy storage.
