How The #BlackCaucus Reacts to Buffalo -A THREAD : Lets take a look shall we:

1/Recovering QVC addict, and Immigration sympathizer Lucy Goosey @RepLucyMcBath says: it MUST not continue. Gee, Lucy McBath don’t you make the law? All it takes is one of you to write it.
2/The Most #Corrupt #Congressman (yes, it’s a real thing, Google it) Slickster and Portabella suit wearing Gregory Meeks @RepGregoryMeeks is disgusted and wishes the survivors a speedy recovery. He's with you buffalo... except when writing a bill to protect you.
3/Plantation Hat, Skee-Wee, OoH-Oop, Geriatric City Girl @RepFredricaWilson didn’t have time. Her last tweet around May 14th was about #Haitians and how we need to support them, she was AWOL when they were getting paws put on them at the border tho.

In a district that has more black people than Latinos (WA-9,) Suspected #AntiBlackRacism candidate @ElectGallardo is running for Congress so that she can help immigrants. Not Americans. She doesn’t mention black people at all. #dragGallardo Get to work family!! #FBA #Freedmen
You can also add Suspected #AntiBlackRacism candidate for CA-52 @Vazquez4CA52 to the list. He’s using that black and brown, underrepresented community word salad language.

1/ The politicization of #Antisemitism is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to the Jewish community. In recent years it has been used as a club by both the left and right to smear others with whom they disagree. I'm not sure which side is more guilty of it.
2/ So I wanted to make this thread to go through some of the major problems this has created for the #Jewish community. First, throwing around the word #antisemitism has watered down the word. Maybe you didn't mean for this to happen, but it seems it has.
3/ If everyone is an antisemite, nobody is an antisemite. That means that this word has been used and abused to the point where it's starting to have no real meaning. And don't get me started on issues about using the term 'Racism' for the hatred of Jews.

For those who insist that we're in some post-racial dream world, here's exhibit 1 - how visa office in Ghana requests the *exact* same documents requested by a visa office in the U.K.

London: if you do not send documents in time it could delay your application.

#cdnimm #racism
Ghana: we're going to throw a procedural fairness letter and a request letter together and warn you about s.16 IRPA right away. Note for non-immi folks: this is a way to fast-track a refusal + open up misrep. #cdnimm #racism
Also Ghana: you better answer truthfully or we will refuse you. The word 'refusal' shows up four times in the letter and 'truthful' twice.

Again for non-#cdnimm folks: can refuse a sponsorship on s.16 for not providing docs and s.40 for misrep. Usually a PFL sent IF concerns.

Humility is driven into you as a trainee. I tempered my expertise for so long that I didn't even tweet until after my postdoc.

Well, dagnabbit, I AM AN EXPERT on #racism, #BlackMentalHealth, + #TheTalk, and of my 40+ (!!!) media appearances last month, here are my #TopTen faves:
And what about police tactics worsening #PublicHealth during the protests? Check out my commentary here in this @FastCompany piece:

We cannot dismantle what we cannot name, which is why it is essential, as we work to address systemic #AntiBlackRacism, that we clearly define it and its impacts. [THREAD]:
Anti-Black racism is the specific historical, systemic, and pervasive policies and practices that are perpetrated against Black people because of the legacies of slavery and colonialism.
Anti-Black racism is not unique to policing. It occurs in other powerful systems and institutions within our society, including healthcare, education, media, business, and child welfare.

I’ve been on many #COVID19 panels regarding #Somalia. There are excellent Somali physicians, public health experts, and health ministers actively addressing Covid19 in Somalia. Yet, we have panel discussing the impact of Covid19 without ANY Somalis. What would you call this?
Is it cultural tourism? Black erasure? White supremacy? Complete and utter disrespect for an entire group of people? What is this? #AntiBlackRacism is global. Never ending colonialism
We’ve spent March and April, along with @HISomalia and @dwaqaf, conducting webinars, training, and implementing mitigation strategies because the rest of the world didn’t care about low resource countries like Somalia. This was done by Somali experts across the globe.

I’d like to thank @Me4Trauma for their support in starting a real dialogue re: #racism, #AntiBlackRacism, #PoliceBrutality and the role of medicine and trauma in addressing this public health issue. The lack of engagement with this long thread tells me a couple of things:
1. We are not ready. Past the statements and the symbolisms of solidarity, we’re not ready to deal with it just yet. This is an emotional process and it’s exhausting. Look at the #BlackintheIvory thread to see what it’s like to live with racism your whole life.
2. There’s a fear of making a misstep and being offensive on such a public platform especially during this time. I get it. It’s too risky to speak on this right now.

Personally speaking, it’s too risky for me to not speak on this right now and fix this system.

The recent #GeorgeFloydMurder in Mnpls, MN has galvanized the world to protest in support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Cause of death: "asphyxiation from sustained pressure" when his neck and back were compressed by Minneapolis police officers”

It didn’t have to take a second autopsy to confirm what the entire world saw on that video. A video I, and many Black parents, still can’t bear to watch.

But the fact that a second autopsy was performed at the request of Mr. Floyd’s family is pertinent to this discussion.

through generations. You could swap the images out for multiple people groups w/ shared experiences of historical and ongoing #trauma. My desire is to not only show how these #atrocities CONTINUE to affect #population #health, but also to implement multilevel interventions 2/6
that mitigate the influence between the aftermath of such injustices & #health. (#Structuralracism has to be addressed to do this.) This is done in #partnership with communities. For too long too many #Scientists (me included) have been #complicit in documenting differences 3/6

For those questioning my direct and blunt approach to #BLM,

I’m tired of #AntiBlackRacism
I’m tired of explaining it
I’m tired of calling it bias
I’m tired of treading lightly so others don’t get uncomfortable and shut down
I’m tired of having “the talk” with my kids
I’m tired of the helplessness we all feel because racism is too complex to deal with
I’m tired of the expectation that it’s up to Black and Brown people to figure it out
I’m tired of having to tell people it’s ok to say Black
I’m tired of the lip service that is diversity and inclusion

I’m tired of it all

I’m direct because Black people are dying and we, in the medical community, can’t see it

I’m direct because we’re tired of dying.

I’m direct because lip service is no longer sufficient

Language matters.

In order for us to solve any problem, we have to speak the same language, so that there’s no miscommunication.
And in that standard form of communication, we should able to identify and name the problem before we can get to the solution.

How can you solve a problem if you don’t know what it is, right?
An interesting thing about intersectionality, being a member of multiple identity groups, is that you can gauge which identity is more problematic. All of the the groups I belong to can converge on one sentiment: anti-Blackness. It’s present among women, Muslims, Somalis.

Tonight is the @PeelSchools Board meeting. Meeting supposed to start at 7:30 pm, with lots of people having arrived early. Great to see lots of community advocates present! Got media is here too including @ShreeParadkar #antiBlackracism

Part 2 of @AsianAllies Student Series included honouring the story of 14 yo #EmmettTill & looking at systemic issues that affect Blk folks. Asian students at @MiddlefieldCI were invited to challenge the ways in which they were privileged & consider being an ally for Blk students. ImageImageImageImage
Some @YRDSB students’ comments & questions: We only learn about Western/white histories in History class!? Asians & Blk characters are quickly killed off on TV shows & movies. What kind of Asian are we talking about? The systems have situated Blk folks to face such circumstances!
It was exciting for me & @JoanneTangYRDSB to know that a number of @MiddlefieldCI students were now feeling: shocked, informed & more aware of #AntiBlackRacism. We hope they continue the #asianalliesconvo & take up the responsibility of being better allies.✊🏼💪🏼 #BlackHistoryMonth

For #BlackHistoryMonth, Asian students at @MiddlefieldCI got together for an @AsianAllies convo to interrogate Asian identities & learn how the #ModelMinorityMyth perpetuates #AntiBlackRacism. We’re meeting again this Friday to find out how to be better allies for Black folks.✊🏼 ImageImageImageImage
Using safe ways to engage students in such convos was key. @JoanneTangYRDSB & I encouraged them to explore their social positions & think about #AntiBlackRacism at a systemic level. #asiansalliesconvo #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory365 #BlackLivesMatter @YRDSB @yrdsbinclusion
We look forward to seeing how the @MiddlefieldCI students are going to continue these convos beyond this 2-part series! ✊🏼💪🏼 #asiansalliesconvo #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryMonth2020 #BlackHistory #BlackLivesMatter @YRDSB @yrdsbinclusion
