Re the #LACityCouncil a brief thought on some emerging dangers of #antiBlackness.

Anglo whiteness is particularly self-referential, unable to recognize the codes of other histories of whiteness. For example anglos read all latines as non-white.
1/
The xenophobia with which anglo whites try to racialize latine whites is real and harmful, but it is also real that white latines, whether in the US or farther south, have access to powerful, genocidal modes and histories of whiteness and settlerness.
2/
It's not a repeat of how the Irish & Italians became white, since the upper classes of Latin American countries are already white, some are full on settler states, etc. But the infamous reactionary tendencies of newly white Italians & Irish, for ex., might be a cautionary tale.

Do we think #Immunology/#STEM stacks up as a welcoming and inclusive field? The general consensus is that #DEI in society is the same in #STEM, but at least we are having conversations around it even if action is slow 2/

Just in case anyone was unaware: the Choctaw Nation chose to legalize chattel slavery within the tribe. Tribal members owned slaves of African descent and many enslaved people walked the Trail of Tears with their masters during Indian Removal.
Once in Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma, Choctaws continued owning slaves and slaves built much of the infrastructure in Indian Territory. Slaves rebelled. For example, many Choctaw slaves participated in the 1840 Slave Rebellion in the Cherokee Nation to escape bondage.
Slaves performed difficult labor under the threat of and with actual violence. The Choctaw Nation had slave patrols as well.

Correction: the Cherokee Slave Rebellion took place in 1842.

I have seen so many white academics posting their rage, solidarity, demonstrating their allyship by directing other to books, creators, thinkers who speak to anti racism and anti blackness in prticular. Yay! BUT
As a black academic, I’m slightly dubious because I wonder is this performative. How many of their black colleagues experience this solidarity and allyship? How many interventions have they made i their departments on their campuses for black lives?
#AcademicTwitter Black Lives Matter is about changing institutions. So organize, strategize, actualize what you theorize. Because this work is about saving lives. You value the work of black academics, scholars and activist by valuing their lives everyday, is all your work.

So, I am at @UIHealth with my Black friend, a Black trans person. They are visiting someone who is in the hospital. While they’re standing in the hospital room, another visitor enters the room and punches them in the face. This person doesn’t say anything. [1]
They don’t greet them. Nothing. They just punch them.

I go directly to the charge nurse a woman named Isabel and I tell her what’s happened. [2]
She goes to the room at @UIHealth, asks my friend if someone has hit them, they say yes, she asks who, they point to the person, she paces back to me, and then gets on the phone. [3]

#storytime it’s #BlackHistoryMonth and I want to tell you all a little HIStory about my son. He is 14.5 years old and has an internship at Google. He is diagnosed with ADHD at 6 and has an IEP. I am going to tell you about systemic racism 1st hand.
At @SuccessCharters he went to their whitest location at the time (and still maybe) Upper West. He went there from 2011-2014. It was ran by predominantly white staff that probably considered themselves liberal and not racist. He was denied all his mandated services.
Instead of helping my son they suspended him. I know you’re probably thinking what does this have to do with #BlackHistory Well one day someone is going to do some research and my child is going to come up. Because he left this “school” 6 years ago & people still reach out to us

It's taken me 45 trips around the sun, but for the first time in my life I know what it feels like to have a "band-aid" in my own skin tone. You can barely even spot it in the first image. For real I'm holding back tears.
Not like I didn't know these strips existed. But I definitely didn't expect the complex emotions that would swirl as I watched it just ... blend in. A seemingly trivial exercise I've repeated 1000x on my body with "regular" ones since childhood. Self-administered #antiblackness
This felt like belonging. Like feeling valued. Sadness for my younger self and millions of kids of color, esp black kids. Like a reminder of countless spaces where my skin is still not welcomed. Feared. Hated. Like, "Why am I really thinking all this 'bout an effing band-aid?"
