What's going on with #China and #COVID-19?

Briefings šŸ“Š healthdata.org/covid/updates

Here's the breakdown: a thread šŸ§µ The daily reported COVID-19 death rate per 1 million in Chin
What we're expecting in #China:
- Major #omicron epidemic in coming months
- According to our reference scenario, we expect 323,000 total deaths by 4/1/23
- Infections to peak around 4/1, but we expect number of susceptible individuals to sustain transmission months after April
What about #vaccines?

Although there is a high #vaccination rate, there's comparatively low effectiveness of the vaccines used in #China against Omicron & the large gap since vaccination for many individuals means that 80% of the population is susceptible to #Omicron infection.

#FreedomDay would people who now feel they have freedom and #Covid is just a cold, whoā€™ve been on holiday, the pub, concerts, etc., join our #Campaign to getevusheld.uk. @evusheld4theuk is a group of immunosuppressed ppl who donā€™t respond to Covid vaccine. Because ā€¦..
They donā€™t respond to #pfizer, #AstraZeneca #Moderna or they canā€™t have the same vaccine as you because drugs they are taking for @bloodcancer_uk @kidneycareuk @ArthritisSoc and many other diseases you havenā€™t heard of but YOU might get. Nobody expects a life limiting diagnosis
There is a drug they could have which would act like t(e vaccine acts on you. Itā€™s called #Evusheld and made by Astra Zeneca. The Gov rolled out the vaccines in the emergency of Covid and you can have them without any further testing, no matter which #variants come alongā€¦

I am a doctor who contracted covid caring for covid patients at work. Failure to provide RPE left me and my colleagues knowingly exposed to deadly airborne pathogen. Previously fit and well, no co-morbidities, I am a shell of my former self. šŸ§µ @LaylaMoran @AppgCoronavirus 1/10
Diagnoses so far include, encephalitis, central sleep apnoea, myopericarditis, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, dysautomnia, POTs, PEM/PESE. 14 mths into this illness, I am still housebound. 2/10
After dedicating the last decade of my life to becoming a doctor & placing myself into significant debt, I now face the threat of dismissal. 3/10

Patients have been asking about the new #COVID19 #antivirals.

I looked into the effectiveness of two well-publicised 'game changer' anti-virals, #Paxlovid and #Lagrevio ImageImage
On the Pfizer medication which has widespread coverage in the media - #Paxlovid - well it is unpublished, though the FDA issued an emergency approval. Pfizer website has minimal info.

But is looks like- for HIGH RISK patients only- it reduces the risk
of hospitalisation or death by 3.5% (that is 29 people needed to be treated, so that 1 benefits).

Caveats ++ as unsure on side effects, cost etc. but that is genuinely useful, yet prob not the 'gamechanger' for community care, which #COVIDcelebs would lead us believe.

@jenbrea Hey! So I'm getting to the point where I could write a long paper about potential overlapping connections b/t #Alzheimer's and #MECFS, but I'll summarize a few top trends in this thread! First, I brainstormed often on topic with the late Rob Moir
@jenbrea 2/ Robā€™s research (done w/ Rudy Tanzi + Will Eimer at Harvard) forms the core of a potential ongoing paradigm shift in Alzheimerā€™s - namely that #amyloid beta may be an antimicrobial peptide that forms in response to pathogens in #brain tissue: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30001512/
@jenbrea 3/ To better understand that research, read this #interview I did with Rob before he passed away last year from glioblastoma. Key to ME/CFS is his work indicates that amyloid may form in response to herpesviruses like HSV1 in the Alzheimerā€™s brain: microbeminded.com/2017/12/18/intā€¦

As the #COVID19 #outbreak evolves, comparisons have been made with #influenza. Both cause respiratory disease but there are important differences between #SARSCoV2 #virus causing COVID-19 & the influenza virus causing the #flu [from WHO COVID situation report 06.03.2020] #scicomm
Similarity #1. Both #COVID19 & the #flu have a similar disease presentation. Both cause respiratory disease, which presents as a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and even death.
Similarity #2. Both #SARSCoV2 & #influenza viruses are transmitted by contact, droplets & fomites so same #publichealth measures (hand hygiene, good respiratory etiquette (coughing into elbow / into a tissue, immediately disposing of the tissue) are important to prevent infection

Incredibly important hypothesis piece published today šŸ‘‰ ā€œProposed here is a theory that #microorganisms from within the #brain and elsewhere in the body contribute to the long-term #neurological deterioration characteristic of traumatic brain injuryā€: sciencedirect.com/science/articlā€¦
From paper šŸ‘‰ 1. ā€œFirst, since the normal human #brain is not sterile, but is host to a variety of microorganisms, blows to the #skull may dislodge them from their accustomed local environments, in which they have been living in quiet equilibrium with neighboring #brain cellsā€
2. ā€œ2nd, upon impact commensal #microbes already resident on surfaces of the nose, mouth + eyes, and potentially harmful organisms from the environment, may gain access to the #brain through the distal ends of the olfactory + optic #nerves or even a disrupted blood-brain barrierā€
