A brief thread to explain why the bitter conflict over Nagorno Karabakh may be entering a dangerous new phase, based on a phone call I received tonight from Stepanakert from Ruben Vardanyan, the state minister for Artsakh, as #Armenians call the disputed territory.
Vardanyan confirmed reports that Azerbaijan had blocked the highway to Armenia, cutting off food, energy and medical care. He said the move will create a “humanitarian crisis” and was an attempt to “force everyone to leave” if they don’t submit to political control from Baku.
Vardanyan said Armenian residents of Karabakh were “prepared to fight” rather than submit to unilateral Azerbaijani demands over how the region should be managed. He said the Karabakh government had asked Russia to reopen the road, thus far without success.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God was located in Baku's Walled City (Icheri Shehir). It was built in 1797-1799, although a church has been mentioned here as early as the 13th century in Armenian and Persian sources. It was destroyed in 1992 and a cafe stands in its place.
You can see the #Armenian Church of the Holy Mother of God again here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, standing next to #Baku's infamous #MaidenTower.

In den letzten Tagen flogen schwere Transportflugzeuge vom Typ An-124 reihenweise in den Kaukasus und brachten Technik und Menschen dahin.

With this agreement, #Azerbaijan is not one but two steps ahead in international law, and have full rights to evaluate environmental, infrastructural damages and demand full compensation (min est USD 100 billion) from #Armenia. Armenia will never be able to pay this back.

There was clearly no alternative for #Artsakh and #Armenia to signing the deal. As #Shushi fell, constant shelling of #Stepanakert would have followed and a complete loss would have followed. It was the only chance to safe some lives, at least.
Yet, that treaty is horrible:

Most of the lost territory was sparsely populated (Agdam, Kalbajar and Lachin Rayons of #Azerbaijan). They were always kept as buffers, mostly. Losing them surely weakens #Aartsakh, but at the same time was always calculated for.
What hurts the most will be the loss of #Dadivank, #Tigranakert and #Shushi. Basically, all historical and culturally important places of #Artsakh are now in the parts taken by #Azerbaijan.
