3/ Accelerated aging effects from living in space: 6 months in space ~ 10-20 years of aging on Earth. We don't know yet if it the aging stabilizes or continues. Open problem: no health solution for deep space missions. We need to create future deep space health systems.

The goal of the @NASAArtemis I mission is to test the flight of the @NASA_SLS rocket & @NASA_Orion – the spacecraft that will carry humans to the lunar surface. Through this test we can ensure the safety of a crewed second mission.
But the mega moon rocket is not all we’re testing! Riding along are ten cubesats and experiments that will help us understand the Moon’s environment and collect data to prepare us for a sustained presence on the Moon with @NASA_Astronauts, #NASAScience, and new @NASA_Technology.

I can understand their skepticism. In some ways we have become a generation accustomed to seeing it all. The bombardment of Hollywood CGI dulled our capacity to be shocked. And current societal divisions leave us often in a state of fatigue and malaise. 2/14

If we have learned anything about Artemis today, it is that NASA doesn't take it serious. If there really was that feeling of a generational change in the agency, the ARTEMIS GENERATION, surely there would be a camera inside Orion? And HD video in more than 5 fps.
Instead, we were looking blankly at mostly static 3d animations. No data to be seen. No video. Nothing. Occasionally getting an update "everything nominal", unless the crude analog audio system broke down.

Will be surprised if #Artemis1 launch happens today. If or when today's countdown reaches T-10 mins they'll pause for half an hour and, if everything looks OK and they can fit it within the 2-hour window (opening 13:33 UK time), set a specific launch time.
Apparently there's a problem with one of the four main RS-25 engines and a crack has developed between two of the tanks. blogs.nasa.gov/artemis/2022/0… I'd suggest this makes today's #Artemis1 #SLS launch highly unlikely. #Artemis

Many of my space friends will hate this 🧵, but I very much share @sciguyspace’s misgivings about #SLS & would go further. I understand his argument that we had to squander $50bn on SLS+ for people to realize it’s not the future of crewed spaceflight & we need to transition… 1/5
to sustainable, reusable, far less expensive and more capable rockets such as #Starship. But the issue is we could still be wasting billions on these launches for years to come, and slowing down Moonbase progress. I do think #Artemis as an idea is too far along not to happen. 2/5
Yes #WeAreGoing so I’d be fine if #SLS blows up en route to orbit so long as no one’s hurt. That way everyone would have to accept it’d be too costly and take too long to build another SLS just to test, and they should divert the money elsewhere for our return to the #Moon. 3/5
