THREAD: The charges Democrats are leveling here are, on their face, laughably inadequate to support impeachment.
First, they claim Trump acted to "obtain an improper personal benefit, while ignoring or injuring the national interest." They arenāt charging bribery, because this doesnāt fulfill the elements of bribery: they canāt show what the bribe was, or the intent to commit such a crime.
So that means theyāve widened out the charge itself to include āignoring or injuring the national interest,ā which is far more general than the specific intent for bribery. Virtually every president could be charged with āignoring or injuring the national interest.ā

As democrats unveil two articles of impeachment this morning, all speakers from Pelosi to Nadler to Schiff continue to use words like solemn, reluctant to describe the process that led them to today #NexstarDC
