This is such an important analytical question abt the #AsburyRevival /#asburyrevival2023: Why are both left-leaning & right-wing Evangelicals eager to endorse it? I’ve been puzzling over it & have a few thoughts (@BradleyOnishi & @StraightWhiteJC can speak for themselves). 1/
Truthfully, I was invited to write a 1000-word OpEd on the #AsburyRevival that I mothballed on Friday, bc I realized I don’t have a “take” yet on it. Or, rather, I have endless *takes* but no thesis. The events at AsburyU the past 2 wks have been an Evangelical Rorschach test. 2/
When I was still Evangelical, I inhabited left-leaning Evang spaces (InterVarsity & Fuller Seminary google.com/books/edition/…) & also many right-wing env’ts. We have to remember that left-leaning Evangs are still Evangelicals, & *revival* has a mesmerizing quality for Evangs. 3/

Tucker Carlson covers #AsburyRevival, asks student: "What is this?"

"There's a young army of believers who are rising to claim Christianity, the faith as their own, as a young generation and as a free generation, and that's why people can't get enough." - Alison Perfater

What is interesting about the #asburyrevival is the amount of attention it is getting...

B/c there has been a revival happening for years...

It is happening in the people who have left evangelicalism because of the toxicity and the marriage to Christian Nationalism 1/3
It has been happening as prophetic voices of Black and Brown people speak out against the church's marriage to white supremacy & racism.

It has been happening as victims of sexual abuse find the courage to speak up against the church's marriage to patriarchy and misogyny 2/3
It has been happening as the voices of the LGBTQA+ community speaks against the church's marriage to Homophobia and Transphobia.

This is where the revival has been happening:
in folks having the courage to say to the church "Repent!" 3/3

I've had people ask my take on the #asburyrevival since I'm one of the more prominent Wilmore natives on this here cesspool website. My "take" is I live in Canada and haven't been so I can't really add anything firsthand. All I can do is relay what I've heard.
So full disclosure, I am insanely biased. My family has a close association with both this and the 1970 revival. For Asbury-connected folks: Robert Coleman is my grandpa, and my mom is the person keeping him functional at 95. Many of his books ship out of our basement.
And my dad @lgstone is a professor at Asbury. My parents are Asbury college grads. And all my Facebook feed and groupchats with friends back home are inundated with people at the #asburyrevival . So, again, I AM WILDLY BIASED HERE.

Evangelical twitter is atwit about the #AsburyRevival. Per @drleahpayne, this Methodist school has a history of such outbreaks. I thought I'd offer some history on how the #NewApostolicReformation reacted to something similar 15 yrs ago at Lakeland, FL. 1/
What I tried to capture in my Charismatic Revival Fury series (icjs.org/charismatic-re…) is that the #NewApostolicReformation & Charismatic folks in general are magnetized to the idea of revival, the extraordinary inbreaking of divine-power manifestations in the mundane world. 2/
One semi-recent such magnetic event occurred, in April 2008, in Lakeland, FL. Pastor Stephen Strader of Ignited Church invited Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley to lead a 1-week revival. wrldrels.org/2016/10/08/flo… But the 1 wk extended to 4 mos of nightly mtngs led by Bentley. 3/

What I experienced during a visit to the #asburyrevival, a 🧵

I’ve seen a lot of skepticism online about what is happening at Asbury University right now. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical myself. On my drive down, I was reflecting on how many times I’ve heard people.. (1/x)
called hyped-up worship nights “revival.” My wife and I were chewed up and spit out by the “revivalist,” NAR crowd and culture, and I was dreading pulling up to Asbury because I was scared it would be a waste of time. I’m so glad I was wrong. (2/x)
First, this is not 90’s Toronto or Brownsville. This is not shofars, gold dust, and angel feathers. There were no fire tunnels, gandalf staffs, or “drunkenness in the spirit.” The presence of God is so gentle, comforting, warm, and yet invigorating and empowering (3/x)

Some Thoughts on the #AsburyRevival
-
My prayer: "Pass me not, O gentle Savior. Hear my humble cry. While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry. While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by."

This is Asbury’s chapel this evening. This has been going on for over 70 hours straight.

Sorry to be biblicist & therefore a curmudgeon, but only time will tell if this Asbury "revival" is actually worthy of the name or if it is just futile navel gazing. If/when they start pleading the cause of the afflicted & needy w one voice, then I'll believe they "know" God.+
Getting caught up in a rapture of music & prayer can v well happen when communing w a demon. If this is truly reviving the community's communion w the Xian God, then an explosion of "social justice" is about to happen (!!). Jeremiah 9:24; 22:15–16; Matt 25:31–46. May it be so.
Since more r finding this, I’ll add Acts 2:41–47 & 4:31–35 for the #asburyrevival. The 1st 2 episodes of the Spirit filling the church lead immediately to meeting the material needs of others. This is instructive. What God has joined together let no “revival” separate.
