A Genuine Movement, A Paradox, OR a Hoax.
A Detailed Thread on the Downtown talk of this age.
Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms. Motivated by the quest for social justice, feminist inquiry provides a wide range of perspectives on social, cultural, economic, and
political phenomena. Yet despite many overall shared commitments, there are numerous differences among feminist philosophers regarding philosophical orientation, ontological commitments (such as the category of women), & what kind of political and moral remedies should be sought.

#AuratMarch2022 Some thoughts.

(This will be my simultaneous defense and critique of #AuratMarch. Hoping for a patient read)

1) "AM only talks about petty problems and not the big problems faced by women."

'Big problems' almost always stem from ignoring the 'petty problems'.
Rape culture stems from trivializing harassment; harassment stems from male entitlement; male entitlement is fed when men are not even expected to heat their food or keep their socks.

To overturn an oppressive system, you have to aim at its roots. 'Petty problems' are the roots.
A doctor wouldn't refuse to treat your high blood pressure because people are dying of aneurysms. He would treat it precisely because people can die of aneurysms.

Also, AM does talk about big issues too.

1. Last night In a Space my mouth went dry talking in favour of #AuratMarch. After the #NoorMuqqaddam incident I forgot about everything and encouraged every person to stand by every woman UNCONDITIONALLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY.

Because I thought AM was

2. Today I wake up to a different reality. Everything somehow relates to a political movement. Looks like a political party is speaking for political causes instead of Women Causes.

The local media has been eviscerated but maybe the next time a foreign journalist interviews @ImranKhanPTI, they can ask him why the media regulatory authority lets Orya Maqbool Jan falsely accuse the women's movement of blasphemy on TV, when vigilante murders are a real threat.
His party took advantage of a similar blasphemy campaign by TLP against PML-N. Military intelligence agencies refused to answer Justice Qazi Faez Isa's questions about the right-wing TLP's sources of funding.

It should be investigated who is behind the most recent campaign.
In past, blasphemy card has been used against army's critics -- everyone from bloggers to TV channel GEO to politicians. Anyone, in PK or abroad, who buys our Generals' promises to end extremism/militancy should remember that this is how they stay in power

Dishonesty & hypocrisy are almost a way of life in our society, to preserve the facade of perfect heterosexual union & family. They'd rather force gay men to marry women(& vice versa), stay closeted & lead double lives(sometimes acting homophobic to fit in) than to tell the truth
I've heard of several divorces of women who unknowingly married gay men, often through an arranged marriage. These men never admitted their sexual preference so their wives had added burden of wondering why their husband wasn't attracted to them.

Ruining lives is OK for society
I've also heard from a gay friend in Lahore about how he looked up his date's Facebook profile after their first meeting only to find that he had a photo of his wife and kids. And this person was using a dating app to meet young men.

This, too, is acceptable for society.

#AuratMarch Feminism vs Iqbal’s Idea of Feminism and Pakistan - Thread

Feminism, a social-political movement seeking equality of women with men, has its roots in the 18th century modernization, humanism and Industrial Revolution.

[1]
In developing countries like Pakistan, the concerns over women rights are genuine due to patriarchal notions embedded in the social fabric of South Asian society in general, however, steps in the right direction are being taken.

[2]
Social rights movements signify democracy. #AuratMarch, an annually held social-political March has been organized for the first time in Karachi in 2018 based on the theme of ‘Equality’.

I thought, a couple of weeks ago of writing a piece titled 'Battening the Hatches' in anticipation of the barrage of absolute and utter shit that would rise to the top like a rain gutter in a torrential monsoon, on the 8th of March this year.
I wanted to counteract the inevitable, not sure why.
In a country where hope is a sliver, and your own; your parents, friends, psuedo-woke saathi all find one way or another to undermine you and the work you believe in, this interception I figured just now, is futile.
8th March ho gi. #AuratMarch bhi ho gi. Naaray bhi uthain gay. Gand bhi uchlay ga. Sawal bhi uthain gay. Gaaliyon ki tu farawani ho gi.

Lekin koi manshoor nahi paray ga. 2-4 kay ilawa kisi poster ko koi nahi dekhay ga.

#CFWIJ joined Pakistani #womenjournos in condemning the vicious harassment they face online. Attacks against them in digital spaces are a despicable attempt at silencing freedom of the press. Authorities must take concrete steps to end cyber harassment of women journalists.
1. #Pakistan: #CFWIJ stands with Pakistani #womenjournos who face constant online harassment by misogynistic trolls. We joined them in the campaign to shut down these vicious attackers and demand authorities to take strict actions.

I'm not so interested in male takes on the #AuratMarch.

They are largely irrelevant and usually come from a place of fear and insecurity.

However I am interested in examining the quality of writing deemed fit to publish, so a few quick thoughts on @ShahmeerAlbalos blog.
@ShahmeerAlbalos 1: the #AuratMarch's wide-ranging manifesto was not quoted anywhere. If it had been, 80% of the article's claims would be invalidated at the outset. This editorial choice renders the entire piece suspect and unreliable.
2: The author places the burden of societal change entirely on feminists and feminist movements.
This is a classic way to delegitimise feminist movements: setting them up to fail by assigning them a largely unachievable task. And so #AuratMarch organisers in urban centers are

The Islamabad High Court has dismissed the arguments in the petition against the Aurat Azadi March!

These were the remarks by Chief Justice Athar Minallah on the petition submitted against us:

#AuratAzadiMarch2020
Have you read the demands issued by the organizers circulated widely on media & able to highlight anything unconstitutional or unIslamic? On what basis can you hypothesize is that there demands & slogans are bound to be unIslamic? Do you have any evidence to support your claim?
"The Aurat Azadi March organizers have already clarified the meaning of the slogans being impugned & how they fall within the rights already granted by the Constitution of Pakistan & by Islam. How can the petitioners say 'that is wrong' & attribute a negative meaning to them?"

I've been hearing the debate on #MeraJismMeriMarzi and #AuratMarch2020 but while everyone has jumped on the bandwagon to criticize the march, let me remind you of some harsh facts that you forgot to lash out about.
I personally searched and read details of every case of violence against women and children reported since the start of this year.

After hours of going through the traumatic accounts, I compiled all the cases and their details and I decided to share them with everyone.
Please remember, these are only the cases that were reported and made it to the news.

The number of unreported cases is way higher than what we believe.

1/ Every time someone sheds crocodile tears about #AuratMarch placards I think of the inimitable @monaeltahawy and how she says that her civility doesn’t extend to people who dehumanise and target her. We don’t owe anything to people who would crush us in a heartbeat.
2/ We don’t owe anyone more explanations, civil discourse where we patiently and repeatedly explain what “my body, my choice” means, be told that unless we tow the acceptable line we won’t be considered at all, let alone with any respect or dignity.
3/ It’s taken something as unignorable as K.Qamar’s vitriolic, vomitous tirade, emboldened by everyone who watched his show, for people to finally say oh now THAT was bad- women have been saying it for months. But nobody listened to us- ironically, it still took another man.

Thread:

All my life, I have used public buses in Karachi and many a times touched inappropriately while coming to home from college. What did I do? Get myself covered in a bigger chadar. Took a scarf. Took my brother with me to the bus stops. Wore lose clothes.
The harassment didn't stop. I thought guilty of myself. I felt bad about my body. When I first started working, I was a young enthusiastic student full of hopes and dreams for a better future. I wanted to work to gain financial independence.
I was an innocent, naive person with ideas in my head like I will stop working when I get married (Because the society taught me so). My first experience of harassment came at my first workplace. He was the most sweetest boy of office. Innocent-looking, full sunnat bearded man.

Glad #AuratMarch happened & did exactly what was needed; started a debate. I have had men listen to me patiently as I explained my experiences of being groped. I have had the same gender make me uncomfortable as I sat next to them in a plane. #NotAllButMost
I have had male seniors tell me that I am more talented than my male colleagues. I have had men come to my office just to ‘look at’ the female ASP. I have had a father who told me I could be anything. I have had the same parent push me to cover my head for the fear of other men.
I have had male friends tell me its alright to hang out with guys. I have had friends tell me to wear ‘something appropriate’ on these hangouts. I have had men tell me equality is the right of every living being irrespective of gender. I have had men tell me it’s not.
