Just a casual reminder that @fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge has raised 40k for relief efforts from the #AustralianBushfires by auctioning off her #GoldenGIobes dress & then went on @ellen to ask people to donate.
If that wasn’t enough she raised another 25k & promptly matched it. Image
As the world gets a little bit darker it’s really heartening to see that “look for the helpers” quote bear out.
It’s tempting sometimes to give up & tune out & not care - & then you see people who have no reason to give a damn giving their voice, platform, time, hands, heart. 🤗

Here is a thread about UK Parliament's discussion of the #AustralianBushfires and its propagation of a climate denialist narrative, and about where Ministers get their information from.
1. In the UK Parliament yesterday, 9 Jan 2020,
Richard Drax MP asked:

"Can the Minister help us understand how these fires started? Arson plays a role. Does she have any evidence or feedback from the Australian Government on how the fires physically started?"
2. The Minister in question, @HeatherWheeler, had *only* this to say:

"Very regrettably, it is widely reported on social media that 75% of the fires were started by arsonists."

What are we to make of this statement?

THREAD Over the last few days my Twitter feed’s been full of incredible fundraising & donations for frontline responders to #AustralianBushfires by celebrities, sportspeople, musicians, actors, authors, instagram influencers, media commentators & more. It makes my heart sing. BUT
As a longterm scholar of citizen civic & political engagement in Australia I also see it reinforces our national story of community-engaged ‘doers’, resilient in the face of a crisis, ‘she’ll be right’ as long as we all help one another.
On the surface this is a good thing. Despite decades of consumerist neo-liberalism, a strong communitarian/egalitarian ethos remains strong here (tempered sometimes by ugly debates on who’s most deserving or un-deserving of community support)

Over the past 30 days, @ABCWorldNews @CBSEveningNews @NBCNightlyNews @MSNBC and @CNN have done 95 segments on the #AustraliaFires, which have killed 17 people and 500 million animals so far.

Only two of those segments mentioned #ClimateChange.

[Thread]
@ABCWorldNews @CBSEveningNews @NBCNightlyNews @MSNBC @CNN On the 29th, @GarrettHaake interviewed @KendraWrites on @MSNBC's morning show about the links between Australia's bushfires & climate.

It was a great segment; Haake asked excellent questions and Pierre-Louis gave clear, compelling answers.

Too bad it was a total outlier.

@ABCWorldNews @CBSEveningNews @NBCNightlyNews @MSNBC @CNN @GarrettHaake @KendraWrites And then on the 31st, @CBSEveningNews patched in a segment on the fires from their Aussie affiliate, which mentioned only in passing that Morrison has been "criticized for his lack of action on climate change."

No explanation for the link between climate and fire. Zero.

Your timely reminder that a politician's business is not 'problem solving', it's 'risk aversion'.

A thread:

(#AUSTRALIANBUSHFIRES #Australia #australiaisburning #auspol #NSWbushfires)
That's why you see them sit idly by when issues persist - because even though they might be able to solve a problem, if doing so poses a risk, they will always choose inaction.
We see it with their approach to social and economic issues consistently.

We see it in how they call for Royal Commissions when issues come to the forefront - not because Royal Commissions solve things, but because they avert and divert the sense of risk.
