Reminder as Autism Acceptance/ Awareness Month/week/day approaches. Please share this around. I’ve added some links that can be educational to those that don’t understand about Autism Speaks and the Puzzle Piece symbol and ABA Therapy and why they are harmful and offensive to the… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
There’s rumours being spread by the Anti-Neurodiversity bullies online trying to silence Autistic people and our voices by trying to convince people that everyone who uses the ActuallyAutistic tag is self-diagnosed, faking being autistic or “fauxtistic” as ko-fi.com/post/Self-diag…twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
So here goes for the following written information…. Just because you haven’t heard about any of this... doesn’t make it not true. And just because you like “x,y and z”and you’re autistic or a parent of an autistic person... it doesn’t make the following not true. Please don’t… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

So let this be a reminder as Autism Awareness/ acceptance week/ month is coming up… DO NOT SUPPORT National Autistic Society in the UK. @Autism #autism #autistic #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #actuallyautistic #allautistics
If you want to learn more about this therapy and how harmful it is then here’s a link to a document explaining what it is and how it’s harmful and it includes links to the research studies that prove ABA/ PBS therapy is harmful docs.google.com/document/d/11_…

Also for YEARS the National Autistic Society’s young Autistic ambassadors have tried to get them to make a statement against PBS therapy and to STOP funding it and hiring ABA/PBS therapists but so far they’ve had zero luck. #autism #autistic #ActuallyAutistic #allautisticstwitter.com/i/web/status/1…

We’re only in the first week of April & I’ve already received a multitude of emails asking about how to respectfully speak about Autism & Autistic people.

Here are a few gentle reminders, for those of you who want to be good allies this month:
In the debate over “Autistic Person” or “person with autism”, though individual opinions can and do vary, Autistic person is preferred by most Autistic (not all) people.

It’s always good to ask & respect the individual’s choice in how to identify themselves.
Aspergers is being phased out as a diagnosis though some Autistic people have received this label in recent years (depending on where they live in the world).

Autistic is Autistic.

Separating Autistic people this way harms all of us even those who are given the Aspergers label.

I found out that I was Autistic, at the age of 29, fairly late in life.

When I would tell people this newly discovered information, often, they would have a range of reactions, from not knowing how to respond, to disbelief.
In my experience coming out, Autistic has been a lot like coming out Queer -you have to come out over & over again.

It is an endless process with each & every new person you meet (if you choose to disclose that information).
When you do decide to disclose this information to people who may have been close to you in your life, you may lose people, because some humans will be unable to accept the new information, in relation to the way they think of you.

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

I didn't write a new #AutismAcceptanceDay post because pandemic, so please harken to this @washingtonpost chestnut on my long but fruitful autism & parenting journey—How listening to autistic adults helped me understand & support my son:
washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2019… #neurodiversity 1/
Having a disabled child is not particularly rare. Yet our society rarely addresses disability as a real parenting possibility, which means non-disabled parents like me are usually in the dark about best practices for raising a child with a disability. 2/
This state of ignorance is unfair to everyone involved and has made countless kids and parents miserable.

It really doesn’t have to be this way, though. 3/

Happy #AutismAcceptanceDay - maybe it would be a good idea to accept and listen to us every day, and outside of social media as well.

Autism is not a superpower because not all autistic people have what you guys call a superpower.
There are millions who can't even speak. It is a disability (sometimes "invisible", yes, but still a disability) and it needs to be validated as such.
Yes, it's nice to recognize the "positive" things that autism can offer to some, but many have no chance of experiencing anything positive at all.

And even those who do (which is my case), still go through a lot of suffering every day.

I am still beyond honored to have an essay in this collection. Mine's a short piece, so I’ll give you the highlights of how I moved from #AutismAwareness to #AutismAcceptance. However the rest of the essay are the meat of the #neurodiversity matter. 1/
All Done #AutismAwareness: There’s a saying we overuse in my household: “All done, [X]!” We’ve actually swiped the saying from our son Leo, who is Autistic, as “all done” is what he proclaims when he is completely fed up with the activity or person at hand. 2/
Personally, I am “all done #AutismAwareness.” I don’t think ‘awareness’ is useful. If my loud, handsome #autistic son is in the room, you’ll probably be aware that he’s there — but that awareness doesn’t place you under any obligation to support or understand him. 3/

Today is World #AutismAcceptanceDay! (Or, to some, #AutismAwarenessDay). This means you’re probably being firehosed by autism information. But how do you know if an #autism organization is a trustworthy one? Fortunately, we have guidelines & examples:

thinkingautismguide.com/p/position.html 1/
At TPGA, we believe autistic people of all ages & abilities deserve to be treated with respect, have their civil rights & humanity recognized, & have access to the resources & accommodations they need. We will not support #autism orgs that do not abide by these basic precepts. 2/
We know it can be difficult to identify #autism orgs that legitimately work towards the best interest of #autistic ppl & their families, as questionable autism organizations tend to employ the vocabulary of acceptance & support—even when actively undermining those principles. 3/
