I have recently been told that I should not say I am autistic like I am labelling and discriminating myself so let me make some personal statements for the #AutismAcceptanceWeek 🤝🏽❤️‍🩹
❤️‍🩹 Since childhood, understanding myself was almost impossible. I felt like and I was treated like a cryptid the whole time in the society. Discovering autism for myself was the best thing that happened to me for the advancement of understanding of myself.

❤️‍🩹 For long I’ve seen people who struggled to find their purpose of life. Having found my special interest i.e. “purpose of life” was the most blissful thing I could ever asked for in life. I would like to thank autism for burning my passion for certain things.

Did you know that students with conditions like autism, ADHD, or dyslexia have unique learning needs?

It's #AutismAcceptanceWeek, and I would like to share some tips on how educators can support neurodivergent students in the classroom.

🧵 Follow the thread.
1) A safe and inclusive learning environment is crucial for neurodivergent students. This can mean providing clear expectations, minimizing distractions, and offering accommodations such as extra time or preferential seating.
2) It's important to remember that all students learn differently, not just the neurodivergent. So, it's essential for educators to use a variety of teaching strategies and materials. Making this a normal part of education can benefit all students, regardless of neurodiversity.

Reminder as Autism Acceptance/ Awareness Month/week/day approaches. Please share this around. I’ve added some links that can be educational to those that don’t understand about Autism Speaks and the Puzzle Piece symbol and ABA Therapy and why they are harmful and offensive to the… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
There’s rumours being spread by the Anti-Neurodiversity bullies online trying to silence Autistic people and our voices by trying to convince people that everyone who uses the ActuallyAutistic tag is self-diagnosed, faking being autistic or “fauxtistic” as ko-fi.com/post/Self-diag…twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
So here goes for the following written information…. Just because you haven’t heard about any of this... doesn’t make it not true. And just because you like “x,y and z”and you’re autistic or a parent of an autistic person... it doesn’t make the following not true. Please don’t… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Things #employers need to know, from a personal, very late diagnosed, #ActuallyAutistic perspective, with insights from career roles in organisational development and employment support.

#careers
#employment
1/
The first thing to consider is how to involve existing #autistic #employees.
These are the people with lived experience of being autistic in your workplaces.
How can you make it safe for them to share their experiences?
How can you value their expertise?
Why does this matter?
2/
Autistic people are used to being sidelined and marginalised, and being spoken over and ignored.
If employers are serious about #autism #inclusion in the workplace they need to fix this.
Some autistic employees may not even have disclosed for fear of stigma or discrimination.

Thread about Person First Language and why Identity First language makes more sense and is preferred by Autistic people. Also why a lot of Autistic people view person first language as offensive and harmful!
#Autism #actuallyautistic #allautistics #autistic #AutismAcceptanceWeek
Person first language is language such as “person with autism”, “has autism”, “people with autism” etc is seen as ableist as it sees our Autism as something that needs separating from us and that you have to emphasise at the start that we are “people” first which is offensive
Autism has a huge influence on who we are as people it’s part of us, it cannot be separated from us. Our BRAINS are Autistic. Autism DOES define us in a way but THATS OKAY. It’s not all that we are though. We are not “with Autism” we ARE “Autistic”. Autistic isn’t a dirty word

Apart from parenting children we rarely discuss being #autistic AND being a #carer.
I have personal and professional experience, and I’m interested in why it’s under explored.
Search ‘autistic carer’ and it’s assumed we’re the one being cared for.

I’m focusing here on caring for relatives, family members, or friends.
It’s something many of us find ourselves doing with no training or support.
My first experience of being a carer was as a young adult.
Back then (the early 1980s) the term ‘carer’ hadn’t even been invented.
2/
One of the hardest things was being unrecognised and unsupported by professionals.
My partner had severe mental health issues and I might as well have been invisible.
Even after my existence was acknowledged no one had direct contact with me.
I was left to try and cope alone.

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

Today is the first day of #AutismAcceptanceWeek, so I have a request for everyone who interacts with autistic people (particularly nonspeaking autistic people):

Don’t talk about us while we’re right in front of you as if we’re not there, and don’t infantilize us.
I used to volunteer at a school for disabled people, and we had a lot of autistic students.

Almost all of the teachers would talk to each other about the students, and even complain about them, while they were right there in the same room.

It was so viscerally wrong.
I knew for a fact that the students understood what was being said about them. I watched as their facial expressions and body language changed.

But the teachers didn’t really seem to notice or care.

I was afraid to tell them to stop, in case it would cause me to lose my job.

It’s #AutismAWerewolfWeek, so I’m here to tell you how being autistic is EXACTLY like being a werewolf:

1. Some people think we’re a myth, they don’t believe we exist

2. Some people believe we exist, but we’re monsters

#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth 1/
3. Some people think we’re cursed

4. Some people think we can be cured

5. Some people think they should be able to tell, just from looking at us (What are the signs? Monobrow? Fangs? Bushy tail?)

#AutismAWerewolfWeek #AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceWeek 2/
6. Some people are obsessed with our origin story. The MMR! Vaccines! Heavy metals! The FULL MOON!

7. Some people think we’re supernatural, that we are more than human, superhuman, gifted
