Rules of Engagement #WorldAutismAwarenessDay 1) foster #AutisticAcceptance 2) Believe us when we say, Puzzle Pieces DO NOT help promote #AutisticAcceptance (Dig Deeper into the very problematic history of Autism organizations to understand why)
3) Avoid using toys or childhood images to represent #Autism. #Autistics are #Autistic and will remain as such. We are #DifferentNotLess. When you use toys to represent us, it infantilizes our authentic Ways of Being. Use Rainbow Infinity or Gold Infinity symbols instead
4) Always take an #Intersectional approach to understanding #AutisticTruths. We are from all faiths, cultures, gender identities and more, but our experiences are dramatically impacted by how the world sees our diverse layers of identity and whether we are multiply marginalized

1/4 Often Autistic people assigned female birth are missed as Autistic people because for 70+ years research & researchers were only looking for a narrow Autistic presentation.

Lots of women, non-binary people, & men were missed their earlier Autistic identity discovery.
2/4 And Black Autistic people & Autistic people of colour are really overlooked, which must change.

My interests, for instance, were not the stereotype of trains. I was dedicated to buying & applying makeup in a meticulous way.
3/4 I know far more Autistic people interested in snails 🐌 than trains or buses.

We are seeing a shift from non-autistic led theories & understanding of the abstract "autism", to Autistic led theories and discussion about Autistic experience.

2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

It’s official April. You may have heard that April is considered “Autism Month” to many people.

A few gentle reminders to non-Autistic people, as we jump into this month:
1. Please step aside and let Autistic People lead the conversation about Autism this month.

Historically, April has often been a time non-Autistics speak over Autistic voices, effectively silencing us and cutting us out of conversations about issues that impact us.
2. Please DO help to amplify the voices/words of Autistic people on Autistic issues this month (and all year long).
