Being Autistic for me is so similar to having my invisible illness and being an ambulatory wheelchair user due to peoples judgements and assumptions about my disabilities and physical health.

(Iā€™ve had 3 knee surgeries and will need a knee replacement eventually and I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and heart condition etc)
1. People say I donā€™t look Autistic.
People also say I donā€™t look sick or disabled. But itā€™s not something you can always actually physically see. You canā€™t see Autism just like you canā€™t see a lot of disabilities and physical health conditions.

Itā€™s official April. You may have heard that April is considered ā€œAutism Monthā€ to many people.

A few gentle reminders to non-Autistic people, as we jump into this month:
1. Please step aside and let Autistic People lead the conversation about Autism this month.

Historically, April has often been a time non-Autistics speak over Autistic voices, effectively silencing us and cutting us out of conversations about issues that impact us.
2. Please DO help to amplify the voices/words of Autistic people on Autistic issues this month (and all year long).

Now attending the #ESHG2020 session on neuropsychiatry. As an #ActuallyAutistic person, this was very insightful. The research presented was also interesting, but what I gained most insight in was how autism is viewed and talked about. And it needs to change. (1/n)
Autism is still seen as a disease. While there are definitely impairments, in some people more than others, these are often impairments that can be improved by talking TO the autistic person in question about their individual needs. (2/n)
Some autistic people have bigger impairments, which are often due to intellectual disability. Again, communicate WITH the autistic person to facilitate them. Good to realize that some autistic people are non-verbal, but there are alternatives to verbal communication. (3/n)
