If don't know what's going on inside come on you can't tell when you are pushing too hard, or what things are affecting you, or how, whether your being your masked or unmasked self, etc.
2/7
People ask me all the time how to get better at this stuff and it's actually pretty simple. Thought it does take time and attention.

Noticing what's going on in one single body part in this particular moment, creates associations between that sensation and its meaning.

Hey Therapists, Stop telling clients you
"don't understand why they want to know if they're autistic because it wouldn't make a difference, anyway".
#TherapistTwitter #AutisticTwitter
Hey Therapists, Telling your clients "it wouldn't matter if they were Autistic or not" is - at best, dismissive and at worst, medical gaslighting and/or medical trauma - both common experiences in the Autism Community.
#LateDiagnosedAutistic #MentalHealthMatters
Hey Therapists, Stop telling clients they
"couldn't possibly be Autistic because (insert harmful stereotype here)."
It's inaccurate and causes harm to your clients and the Autistic community.

The difference between Autistic masking and Autistic shielding, a thread.
Ahead of my talk on this, thisWednesday on @aucademy

Autistic masking is a trauma response to the consistent bullying, harassment, stigma and marginalisation Autistic people face.
It is so much more than trying to fit in or fly under the radar. It is unconscious self-preservation, an automatic response to keep us safe.
There is also a misconception around Autistic masking that we become outwardly non-Autistic in our behaviours, mannerisms and speech.
This plays very nicely into the neuro-majority idea of invisible disabilities and differences, which is a total fallacy. The idea of ‘invisible’ disabilities was created so that non-Disabled people could continue to gaslight, neglect and abuse us under the guise of ‘not knowing’

1/18 So today, with the support of @nicolaleaking & @BrownlessElaine, I brought the latest round of the Inside of Autism to a close.

I hate the sales pitch stuff, so this is me, just letting you know what the Inside of Autism is & letting you decide if it might be useful to you:
2/18 Non-Autistic/#Autistic people, whether you are Professionals/parents or otherwise: 'The inside of Autism' has two rounds left in 2022 (one in Sept and one in Nov).

Sept is 3/4 full already and November is 1/2 full.

Places go FAST (That's not a sales pitch, they really do)
3/18 But what is it?

Its training, but it isn't autism training. At least not like you're used to.

The course focuses on reframing the #Autism narrative from an Autistic perspective, based on current Autistic & ally-led research & aims to introduce new concepts & give new tools

Getting home from work, unmasking and throwing it onto the back of the sofa like a bra or tie.

#AutisticMasking
We're forced to mask, like an intrusive and unreasonable extension of a dress-code, because if we don't - and let being autistic breathe a little - then we get loads of grief in various forms.
So finally being able to take it off and relax into ourselves a bit (if we even can) is a good feeling.

It is really difficult though. Sometimes the mask sticks. Sometimes it won't come off.

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.
2. Later on I did a 3hr workshop on #AutisticMasking to 400 lovely Danish people with @DrAmyPearson. I missed #AutismAwarenessDay yet still somehow managed to pass on a shitload of useful & practical #Autism knowledge to a shitload of people
3. Its strangely like there's no need to have #AutismAwarenessDay, #AutismAwarenessWeek, or #AutismAwarenessMonth because for many Autistic people every day is, week and month of the year where we put out immensities of useful & productive #Autism information in various forms.

*An appeal to NON-autistic people: please take a few moments to read this thread*

We (#Neurodivergent people) were taught early in life that everything YOU (#Allistics) said and did was what WE (#Autistics etc) had to aspire to.

We weren’t even told an alternative existed. 1/9
Our #Autism was suppressed before we knew the word for it.

When we protested, we were met with punishment and ostracism.

When we suffered in silence, we were never rewarded for protecting YOU from our *legitimate* anger.

We were converted to #AutisticMasking to survive. 2
All children need mirroring for healthy development. We #Autistics received very little.

Our talents were often not recognized or acknowledged. If they were, it was not for our benefit, but for yours.

Our faults were all noted and attributed to us alone. 3

The MYTH of #HighFunctioningAutism

(sorry, long thread; also about #ABA, but PLEASE try to read it!)

For skeptics who believe an #Autistic with a job or a profession or a child or a relationship leads a life similar to a #Neurotypical (#Allistic), please read this./1
Also, to #AutismParents wanting an #Autistic child to grow up looking & acting “normal” & considering #ABA, please read on.

This is a 2-hour snapshot from my fairly functional day as an #ActuallyAutistic, outwardly very “successful” #Neurotypical-appearing health professional./2
The following represents a particularly SERENE 2-hour slice of my day, a lot less harrowing than the rest of it.

In other words, this is #AutisticMasking at its LEAST taxing./3
