A number of encounters made me think of the significance of #Hegel (1780-1831) as a bridge between premodern and modern philosophy in #Iran 1/ Image
The first was Hamid Enayat (1932-1982) the political philosopher whose memory was still relevant when I was a grad student at #Oxford and who had translated #Hegel into #Persian 2/ Image
The second was Karim Mojtahedy (d. 2019) whose work based on his #Sorbonne doctorate examined the #Qajar era encounter with #European philosophy and #Hegel starting in the circle of Comte de Gobineau (1816-1882), notorious race theorist and diplomat, in #Tehran 3/ ImageImage

The Egyptian philosopher ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Badawi (1917-2002) is perhaps one of the most underrated thinkers of #ContemporaryArabThought - a major #Heideggerian_existentialist #Sufism and #IslamicPhilosophy specialist who studied at Fuad I (later #Cairo) University 1/
Many of us who study #IslamicThought know him for his editions of #ArabicAristotle #ArabicPlato #ArabicPlotinus as well as editions of the work of #Avicenna #IbnSabin #SiwanalHikma and others - without his efforts we would not have editions of the #PlotinianaArabica 2/
In the 1930s he studied in Cairo and obtained his PhD in 1944 supervised by #AlexandreKoyré (1892-1964) on the notion of 'existential time' that engages with #Heidegger - this like his other early works was published by #DaralNahdaalMisriya 3/

A new printing from #Intisharat_e_Mawla of the classic #Persian philosophical summa of #Avicenna written for Ala al-dawla Kakuya the #Buyid ruler of #Isfahan 1/ ImageImageImageImage
Four parts - Logic, metaphysics, physics, mathematics, the last is not extant - the edition was first published 1952 as part of the #Avicenna millennium celebrations 2/
The text is often considered to be like a #Persian version of al-Najat but the logic more closely follows al-Isharat and the order where Metaphysics comes before Physics is more common in post-Avicennian works 3/
