Nothing better for #BannedBooksWeek than a thread of books recently rejected by the Allegheny County Jail!

EVERYONE deserves access to diverse, entertaining, educational, and current literature.
šŸ§µ
In 2020 the Allegheny County Jail tried to ban paper books from entering their facility. Warden Harper cited the pandemic as a reason.

This ban was lifted; however, the Warden now rejects titles that fall well within the posted guidelines for books being sent to incarcerated people.

There aren't actually *too* many restrictions on getting books into the SCIs. Allegheny County Jail on the other hand has a TERRIBLE book policy and no library. An admin that doesn't care about keeping people alive can't be expected to care about reading. #bannedbooksweek
šŸ§µ/4
The worst part of the policy is that IT'S NOT TRANSPARENT! Even if families order books through barne&nobles they are regularly rejected and people don't why. Often not even notified. They get sent back to the seller and people don't always get their money back. 2/4
We're advocating for a better policy that would allow people to get books from more sources (including us!) and transparency for people on the inside, the people sending them books and the public. ACJ needs a REAL library (and a lot of other things like healthcare!) 3/4

The Obscene Publications Act passed in 1857 prohibited the distribution of materials that 'deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such influences.'

So the Bodleian Libraries created the Ī¦ (Phi) Collection.
#BannedBooksWeek Cover of Phallic Objects & Remains: Illustrations of the Ris
The earliest evidence of the Phi collection - items to be hidden from public view - is found in the minutes of a meeting of the Curators of the Bodleian, 1882.

From 1912, students couldnā€™t review a book from the Phi collection without prior permission from a tutor. Tutor's letter of permission - from 1941
By the late 1930s, much of the material was reclassified and redistributed into the collection. But the shelfmark still exists.

There are around 3000 titles in the Phi collection ā€“ from the scholarly, to ancient tomes, to nude drawings and ā€˜scandalousā€™ novels. A copy of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde

A šŸ§µ to end all šŸ§µs

āš ļøCW: Profanity, references to violence, suicidal ideationāš ļø Please proceed with your mental health in mind.
Itā€™s common knowledge that people are capable of some frankly breathtaking levels of cruelty. Iā€™ve known that for a while now, but Iā€™ve never known exactly what that meant until recently.
This is the personal cost of a culture war that weaponizes ignorance, that willfully (or worse) mistakes it for righteousness. As a quasi-90s kid, Iā€™m compelled to ask, ā€œWWJD?ā€

Hmmm I wonder why it might be challenged as a kidā€™s book šŸ§

1/n - In honor of the final day of banned books week, lets take a look at the history of banning, challenging and censoring social studies textbooks in the US. šŸ§µ #BannedBooksWeek #BannedBooksWeek2021
2/n - Before we get to books that were outright banned, I'd like to note that people have been complaining about textbooks for a long time. For example, this clipping from 1836 is from the prospectus of a publishing company. Image
3/n They wanted slave owners to invest since the public would be "benefitted by the instruction of a uniform series of improved school books, and the South protected against the introduction of any matter tending in the most remote degree to assail our institutions and property." Image

#BannedBooksWeek is this coming week. People who seek to remove books from schools & libraries seek to block access by ANYONE to ideas or scenes that make they themselves uncomfortable, rather than discuss those ideas. Here are the top ten challenged books of
2020(source-#ALA):
1. George by Alex Gino

Reasons:Ā Challenged, banned, and restricted for LGBTQIA+ content, conflicting w/ a religious viewpoint, and not reflecting ā€œthe values of our communityā€

2. Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, & You by Ibram X. Kendi & Jason Reynolds

Reasons:Ā Banned & challenged because of authorā€™s public statements, because of claims book contains ā€œselective storytelling incidentsā€ & does not encompass racism against all people. amazon.com/dp/B07WR8LTCZ/ā€¦

In a nation claiming a right to free speech as a fundamental aspect of its law/identity, the power of the state is being used to ban books & works -- including the 1619 Project. We are in dangerous times. As historian Tim Snyder says: We all must pick an institution & defend it.
Join @OneWorldLit and a host of writers and thinkers as we fight back against these attacks on free speech and the open exchange of ideas. There is a difference between private institutions implementing trainings and discussions and government passing laws against speech.
This should not be a partisan issue. You cannot have a functioning, healthy democracy if lawmakers are passing memory laws and seeking to stop the exchange of ideas they do not like. We all have a stake in this. nytimes.com/2021/06/29/magā€¦

During #BannedBooksWeek, Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick is trying to cancel our book (Forget The Alamo) again ā€” this time w/ a show trial masquerading as a panel. He says he doesnā€™t care whether we show up or not, he aims to make an example of us. THREAD:
He tried to do this little trial at @UTAustin, but they wriggled out of it. So now heā€™s falling back to his trusted propaganda outlet, @bullockmuseum, to cancel me and my coauthors @JasStanford and @BryanBurrough houstonchronicle.com/politics/texasā€¦
We were supposed to talk at the Bullock on July 1, but Patrick used his office to cancel our book talk just three hours before it was to begin. As much as the GOP complains about cancel culture, this was a clear First Amendment violation. thestoryoftexas.com/press/press-reā€¦

1/ Since #BannedBooksWeek is over, now it's time for #BanRacistBooksWeek. There are two books that I've submitted a Request for Reconsideration to (ironically) the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.
2/ The books are Monticello Scrapbook (1939) and Young Tom Jefferson's Adventure Chest (1942), both by Betty Davis Via, children's historical fiction about the life of Thomas Jefferson.
3/ The request is to move them to the ACHS Reading Room, where two other books by Davis are shelved, instead of the juvenile section of the library.
